Topic: Printing: Problems with USB_Printers?!

I had a problem the last days, that my USB-Printer (Canon iP1500) on my home-pc did not work anymore in Statler. Reinstalling cups/foomatic/gutenprint and printer-drivers did not solve the problem. What finally helped was installing these packages:

libprinterconf0c2a (0.5-11)
openprinting-ppds (20100630-1)
printconf (0.7.9.4)
python-foomatic (0.7.9.4)
python-ipy (1:0.70-1

Weird thing: Printing was broken in Statler and also Archbang, while printing from Openbox-Lubuntu still worked. So i think it was some package-updates, did in Statler and Arch, that were the culprits,since printing worked before without those packages mentioned above.

I was suggested to try this trick in another posting.  I was able to install libprinterconf0c2a,
openprinting-ppds, and python-ipy with no  hiccup.  But synaptic does not have

printconf
python-foomatic

I also tried apt-get and got

$ sudo apt-get install python-foomatic
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package python-foomatic
$ sudo apt-get install printconf
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package printconf

In synaptic I did a search for foomatic.  I noticed I have them all installed except foo2zjs.  I couldn't
figure out a good way to search for printconf equivalent.  What does this utility do?

For me printconf is in synaptic - maybe some you have some sources disabled???
Synaptic says (Translated from german):

This package detects printers connected to the parallel or USB port on your PC and builds automatic printer queues  for this printers via Foomatic.
Some ... printers will also require foo2zjs oder pnm2ppa to be installed
