Re: Objections to Iceweasel 4 packages?

@ db_crunch

Have a look at the changelog http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/4.0/releasenotes/

Re: Objections to Iceweasel 4 packages?

Thanks, I am reading it now, the DNT - Do Not Track I've kind of already got covered with Opt-Out cookies from Beef Taco, Jägermonkey - faster Javascripting, hmm, not sure if I would be tempted with that as I turn Javascript off with NoScript allowing something to execute faster does not mean it will automatically be a better choice. HSTS - Security protocol, thats covered too with HTTPS Everywhere from the EFF.

From reading the change log I got the feeling it's early days yet and I bet there will be plenty of bugs to iron out before version 4.1 roles off the shelf.. Having read the change-log decided sticking with 3.6.17 for the time being. wink

Lol, from reading the road-map they've also rolled out and brought back, noembed and noframes, which means, once again your browser can be hijacked and made to go full screen thanks to the Jagermonkey faster Javascripting Engine. I can hear them now, OMG, advertising, wait a minute wheres the close page buttons gone.. LMAO

Read it and weep (with laughter).. https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Firefo … developers

If your looking for speed my friends, try Dillo 2.2 but you'll have to download it from the Lucid PPA over at Ubuntu as it appears to have been dropped since 10:10 and I see its also not in Squeeze, it treats all cookies as session only and it sure as heck does not let the browser escape from its frames and embedding! wink

http://www.dillo.org/developer.html

When it comes to your browser, it's an intensely personal preference, I don't want one that can escape from iframe and embed or execute advertising pages that take over the desktop leaving you unable to return to said desktop, twice as fast because of a Javascript engine that sounds like a drink and a monkey combined!

Because everyone wants a browser that's barely being developed and doesn't handle Flash.

Re: Objections to Iceweasel 4 packages?

Well I didn't say it would be perfect for everybody. big_smile I can live without Flash, that store's irremovable LSO cookies anyways, hence the better privacy addon for IceWeasel which removes em.

Flash, HTML5 those things all sound good, but I remember back when it was Internet Explorer 5.0 and the HTA exploit was doing the rounds. Dillo is rock solid. It wont leave you locked out of the desktop due to a full screen advert and its faster than IceWeasel or FireFox and great if the site designer designed the pages with it in mind. No big images that take ages to load, just base64 encoded. etc. Also it does not use the concept of frames in the HTML. It ignores them. No embedding and no iframe mean pages can and will explode into full screen just like they used to do when it was Internet Explorer 5 with no way to close the page if there is no close tag in the JS.

Here see what I mean: <iframe name="Hacked" fram … ">

<html><iframe name="Hacked" frameborder="0" hspace="0" vspace="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://www.google.com" width="2280" height="2024"></html>

Re: Objections to Iceweasel 4 packages?

Linux users have always been a big part of Firefox‘s vocal fan base, and today a group of Mozilla developers has repaid their devotion with some good news. Mozilla’s Mike Hommey reported this morning that his team of coders finally managed to get both 32 and 64-bit Firefox builds for Linux to compile with GCC 4.5.  The updated compiler has been available since April 2010, but Hommey’s team tried twice last year without success to make the switch. Now that they’ve been able to pull it off, Firefox on Linux should perform every bit as well as it does on Windows — with the possible exception of hardware acceleration, where Firefox’s utilization of Direct2D still gives Windows Vista and 7 a performance edge.

Hommey also states that users of older Linux OSes should now be able to use the GCC 4.5 compiled builds, so long as they include the GNU standard C++ library from GCC 4.1.

If you’re wondering when the changes will arrive in your stable Firefox build, it’s going to be a few months. Hommey’s blog post says they’re targetting Firefox 6, and Firefox 5 is set to be released on June 21st. Based on Mozilla’s new release schedule, that should mean the new Linux build should go stable sometime this fall.

Does anyone have any objections/concerns to me uploading Iceweasel 4.0 Beta 9 packages into the Statler repository?

Iceweasel 4 is a potential replacement for Google Chrome, so it would be good to get some testing and feedback on it. smile

Note: if I do this, anyone using the current 3.5 version of Iceweasel will have their browser upgraded.

Sorry if this is a slightly noob question but why Iceweasel over Firefox?

GNU IceWeasel, is a free software re-branding of the Mozilla Firefox web browser distributed by the GNU Project.

The GNU Debian Project keeps IceWeasel in synchronization with upstream development of Firefox while removing all trademarked artwork and re-branding it as IceWeasel.

.deb IceWeasel = Mozilla Firefox

.deb IceDove = Mozilla ThunderBird

.deb IceOwl = Mozilla SunBird

etc. IceCat is another GNU re-branded version thats compatible with both the GNU/Linux and Mac OS X (10.4 and 10.5) operating systems with some minor security enhancements. Take away the branding and they're all Firefox just with a different name. One of the great things about Open Source you can change the name and call it whatever you like. Internet Exploiter sounds good but is a little too close to IE when abbreviated!

Anyone want a version called Crunchy_Biscuit? or Call it "Crumbs!"

I'm not using 3.5 I've gone to 3.6.17 using http://mozilla.debian.net and tried the Beta of 4, but now it wont install 4.0.1 without changes to libcairo and xulrunner 2.0 which squeeze don't like and the technology behind 4 is early days yet. wink

I'm waiting for someone to develop a version that lets you lie to Googles Geo.Location feature so I can lie to it and tell it I'm in Paris, like I already do with my enhanced copy of IceCat.

How should I rate my not my ISP?

I can't help but wonder, is that really the chenchuan communications company slowly poisoning googles geo.location cache causing google to scream you hacked us or is it me bouncing out of anonymous exits onto there search page... phear!?!
