Mic playback sounding about 4x deeper/slower than my actual voice.

I wanna sound like a big grizzly man just as much as the next guy, but it's almost impossible to tell what I'm saying over skype.  I have a HP RF824AA Headset and so far I've tested it with both Skype and gnome-sound-recorder and both make my voice insanely slow. vAny idea what the problem might be?
