Topic: Any good free webhosts?

I'm looking to host a personal site to show off my web development skills, but I would like to avoid a monthly fee.

Are there any sites which allow php, flash and css, which do not contain ads?
Might be too much to ask, the few I have found seem like scams, as google only returns results from their site, or from one or two review sites (google for eu.pn and biz.ht)

Hopefully someone can help me out,

Thanks

Re: Any good free webhosts?

since there are so many free webhosters, all with their own do's and don'ts, I've chosen to host my own site and use DynDNS to give it an easy to remember url. My media-pc is never off, so I've put a LAMP-stack on there, and my 'tests' all are running there (also gave me a chance to learn more about virtual hosts and stuff)

The only drawback is that DynDNS has severely limited their free services; I used to have 5 free domainnames WITH wildcards (so I could use testing.pitje.ath.cx, for example), but nowadays you can have 2 domainnames and no wildcards. Still enough for my purposes smile

Re: Any good free webhosts?

i think 110mb.com was good

Re: Any good free webhosts?

Thanks, 110mb seems good. They really sold me when i read their TOS, which was very down to earth.

Re: Any good free webhosts?

a friend of mine used to use 110mb.com, but he had a lot of downtime, sometimes for 24h on end.
This was quite a while ago though (about 2 years I guess), so it could be better by now.
On the other hand, it's a free service and if you're not upset by occasional downtime, I guess it's a good host (at least I've never heard any bad things from my friend, apart from the frequent downtime).

If it's not to much content, I don't mind hosting some of your tests on pitje.ath.cx (my home machine). If you can wait until this evening (my evening, don't know what time it is in Ontario tongue), I can setup an ftp- or ssh for you.

edit: fixed typo

Re: Any good free webhosts?

Thanks for the offer ptje, but its actually more of a landing page for possible employers. So something I can have on a resume. I'm not sure how static the content will be. And from what I've read on their blog, sometime last September they upgraded a lot of their hardware. I will have some artwork up, and perhaps some interactive applets or flash games etc, so I would prefer a more official host.

Worst case scenario, I fork out the money for a proper host.

Re: Any good free webhosts?

I use byethost, it works okay as long as you are not trying to set up a forum or something that uses as much bandwidth as one.

Re: Any good free webhosts?

110mb seams a bit slow at times but can you really complain for what it offers?

no problem smile

I also use a paid host for more official projects, http://strato.eu, which has very cheap offers and good service. (It's a european host, don't know if they offer services outside the EU)

Re: Any good free webhosts?

I recently signed up with 000webhost. They claim good uptime so I'll be interested to see how it goes.

I would be interested in your experience with them so far. I red some bad reviews.
What are your impressions so far?

Re: Any good free webhosts?

I guess I should post here.

I found  a good alternative that sit in between 'free and crappy' and 'expensive monthly payments'.

www.nearlyfreespeech.net

You pay for what you use. So if your site is tiny in size, you pay less, and if you only get a few visitors, you pay less.

If you think about traditional web-hosting, you can get plans that are $8/mo. for "unlimited" bandwidth and storage. If your not using very much storage or bandwidth, its not a good deal. They are in effect betting that your site will fail / wont have much traffic. NearlyFreeSpeech works the other way around smile.

There site is pretty comprehensive, so I'll let them do the rest of the marketing wink

Re: Any good free webhosts?

I use gigahost.dk. I don't know if it's only for anyone danish (I don't think so), but I pay about 4$ each month, and I can have all the domains and all the traffic I want for that price. It's very nice for someone like me who sells websites incl. hosting and service as I can have an unlimited number of sites for the same price.

And I think they deliver an okay service/uptime/responseness for the price.

Not only that, but I think they don't really give you unlimited bandwidth, if your site gets huge, they either up their rate, drop you, or experience massive slowdowns.
So they're betting that you won't use $8 worth of internet and not taking the hit if you do.

Re: Any good free webhosts?

I've had quite a bit of experience with webhosts I suppose, and I would say that 000webhost is rather worthless.

You can get a month of the baby/hatchling plan at hostgator for $.01 for a month. You can also do this repeatedly...

Re: Any good free webhosts?

@bobrossw, yep they usually have in their terms of service somewhere a hidden cap. Or they include other rules in there, so they can kick you off their service for some other reason if your using too much bandwidth.

Plus you know these machines have a crap load of virtual servers, and there will definitely be a big page file you get to deal with sad.
