Topic: CLI-Only Machine

I decided not to put this in help since it's arch and I'm just asking for opinions.

I just made an Arch virtual machine and have zero intention of putting a GUI on it, it's going to be strictly command-line and I'm going to need some help because of that.

Recommend a Web Browser, Instant Messanger, IRC Client, Mail Client and Music Player that doesn't do GUI. I have Links right now but I'm not terribly fond of it.

Re: CLI-Only Machine

links, elinks, lynx, irsii mutt and mpd. Don't know about messenger.

Re: CLI-Only Machine

adding to Awebb's suggestions,

IRC Client:
I just started using Weechat after many years on irssi. Pretty decent, imho.

Mail Client:
Alpine is easier to set up than Mutt, if a bit less powerful.

Instant Massenger:
Depends on your protocol. CenterIM and Mcabber both work well for Gtalk/Jabber (what I use). Not sure about MSN or Yahoo, though.

Point & Squirt

Re: CLI-Only Machine

I'm thinking I'll do CenterIM, irsii, Alpine, MPD if it supports streaming to the PS3 and possibly changing to either elinks or hacked links for a browser.

Re: CLI-Only Machine

Web Browser - links2, w3m

Instant Messanger - finch, CenterIM - http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Finch

IRC Client - bitchx, irssi, finch, CenterIM

Mail Client - mutt, alpine

Music Player - moc

i forgot to mention the great newsbeuter for the Atom/RSS Feeds;  with w3m or other cli browser it's great.

Re: CLI-Only Machine

Change my mind. w3m, finch, bitchx, alpine and either mpd or something that'll stream to my PS3.

edit: mediatomb or ampache? (or ushare?)

Re: CLI-Only Machine

Also check out K. Mandla's blog. He virtually lives in the cli, and the archives are full of software suggestions.

Streaming to the PS3? Try ps3mediaserver. It can be run as a daemon.

Pretty cool, I saw a neat terminal program in an old Linux User and Developer which I don't see on there though. Byobu, it's an extension of GNU Screen which is pretty rad looking within itself. I think I might have to switch to either a Debian or Ubuntu server though just for the sake of the extremely large repos.

Sweet! I'll have to check all those links out. The lifehacker one looks really rad!

I dunno about that, I've heard some bad things about PMS in the tips and feedback.

Re: CLI-Only Machine

Text editors: Nano, vim
Media player, (I mean, audio player): mpd

Please let us know where can we try out your cli-only distro, because I'd like to have something like that too.
One thing: Make sure the audio and the wireless (for netbooks) work!

Re: CLI-Only Machine

Calendar app = calcurse
twitter client = twidge (works with status.net/identi.ca)
bittorrent = rtorrent
browsers= w3m, heard good things about elinks as well
text editors = vim/nano
file manager = mc midnight commander
image program / wallpaper setting = imagemagick / feh
im app = finch
music = mocp

There's a good list for you.

Re: CLI-Only Machine

Currently a big user of:

rtorrent for bitrorent
vim for editing
mocp for audio
mcabber for IM
wicd-curses for network management

and a recent discovery I'm really enjoying is:

ranger for file management (http://nongnu.org/ranger/)

Byobu might be called screen-profiles. Should be in the repos. Mandla talked a lot about hacking screen a while ago.

What made you switch from CenterIM to finch?  I ask because I'm considering the reverse due to this bug in finch.

I'm not making a public distro, I'm just setting up Arch exactly how I want it. It's the Arch way.

After I'm done making a set-up I'll make a how-to for making your distro like me.

Spoiler Alert: pacman -S w3b

b/c I like pidgin. Seeing that problem though I think I might stick to CenterIM. Everything else I'll stick with though. I hear great things about what BitchX did with issri.
