Although I too prefer MoC for audio, I think I can understand - and even appreciate - the rationale behind having a single player to handle all audio/video media types in a light-yet-robust distro like CrunchBang. Like so many other packages, a user's favorite Winamp clone or ncurses audio player is just an apt-get away.
Also, there are plenty here who prefer to run mpd plus a client app.
for me it's mpd and ncmpcpp
(and gmpc when my wife wants to select music
)
i like MOC a lot, so +1 from me.
MOC all the way!
+1

+1 here too
without wife, though ![]()

THis makes a lot of sense^ The only thing more controversial than a favorite browser/text editor might be a favorite music player. Having VLC there just leaves the slot open for a persons fav to aptitude it's way in. It's seems like it's an even split on the forums MOC/MPD as far as favs go.
Edit:
You know what'd be kewl? If cb-welcome had an audio player choice and an option to automatically setup MPD for people. That'd be pretty useful since some people seem to be daunted by editing the mpd.conf and mkdir/touching a few things.

^ That's a pretty good idea---after reading this thread I decided to go the ncmpcpp route and it took me a while to figure the darn thing out.. luckily I got it by now but helping noobies out would make #! just that much greater ![]()
+1 for cb-welcome script allowing to choose the audio player ![]()

I, too, love cb-welcome, but I don't want to spend 2 hours after the first install with skipping everything I don't need.
The whole distro could be built on-line then, cb-welcome would be integrated in the download section of this website. ![]()
You just need to select a file from some directory using the menu similar to Midnight Commander, and MOC will start playing all files in this directory beginning from the chosen file. There is no need to create play lists like in other players.
I do not need to select any files, with VLC. I just click once on the icon, and CrunchBang plays the streaming audio.
None of this nonsensical "console" business, from 50 years ago....
yeah, TTY, you remember those? I do. That's not a technology I regret. Line Printers? TEX? Consoles! bah. humbug.
Give me VLC any day of the week. I want the BEST. That's why I use CrunchBang. Remove VLC from it, and CrunchBang, for me, becomes just another coaster.
MPD: Here's what I have read about it:
mpd
How does MPD work for streaming audio reception? Is it faster than VLC? Why is it preferred rather than VLC?
VLC works very well, not only on linux, but also on Win 98 and XP. Does MPD?
Can someone explain what advantage MOC or MPD offer, compared with VLC? how are they superior to "Clementine", or "Aqualung", and several other hopelessly inadequate players for streaming audio reception? VLC is the gold standard. We don't junk the gold standard for platinum, until after the new replacement standard has been shown to be at least as performant as VLC. Where's the study comparing VLC to either of these players?

No one is suggesting VLC be removed; merely that a dedicated music player be added. MPD and MOC are two such music-only players. This is contrast to VLC which plays both audio and video.
As for streaming, MPD has several frontends some which may provide it. Sonata provides streaming however since I never used it I cannot give more info.

I've never done a real study about the differences between audioplayers, but I've tried a few until I liked what I had - being mpd for listening to my mp3s and VLC for almost all my other 'media-needs'
MPD: I personally like the fact that I can log in and out and my music keeps playing. I also like the fact that gmpc makes it simple for me to remotely control mpd on my mediaserver. (Yes, I know there are other ways, and probably better ones, too. I'm just happy with the way I've setup things now.)
VLC: It eats 99.9% of the media I throw at it. Simple interface, stable. Perfect for my needs.
