Topic: Xfce 4.8 in sid
Seems like 4.8 is now in sid:

Anyone with #! upgraded to sid tried it yet?
I might try a testbed install to check it out later...

I just set up Xfce 4.8 on openSUSE 11.4 and it's great. More feature rich, lighter and easier to configure than gnome 2.x (or 3 for that matter). I think it's what all the disaffected gnome users will be switching to.

I think your prediction is spot on!
Regarding 4.8 being in Sid, I noticed this today myself, exciting stuff! ![]()
Awesome! ![]()
this is a noob question. How do I get xfce4.8 (I already have the liquorix repo in my sources.list) would I have to go to debian testing/unstable to get this?
Yes you would have to get it from sid/unstable. Read this thread:

thanks! ![]()
hope that testing and stuff doesn't kill my system! ![]()
Oh, now that is going to be way to tempting ![]()
I think I am going to wait for it to get to testing, then subsequently to backports before I give it a try, just like I did with 4.6 in Lenny. I shall be strong! ![]()

I'll let you know how it goes. I'm installing it right now. ![]()
I shall be strong!
Good things come to those who wait
Perhaps just in a VM for now.
It's fairly similar to 4.6, just feels like 3 or 4 more layers of polish. For example, the panel can be transparent now without making your icons transparent...There's more panel plugins (including a cpu governor) also the config menus are more straightforward with more options.

just installed it. You're 100% right!

I could've sworn a CPU governor plugin was in xfce4-goodies the last time I used it...asking apt right now...nope, xfce4-cpufreq-plugin is just a monitor. I must've been thinking of the Gnome panel plugin...
^woops looks like they got me too...the one in 4.8 is just a monitor...I thought the dropdown menus meant you could change the settings like in gnome...ah well.
just installed it. You're 100% right!
Are you running testing with xfce4 pulled from sid, or have you dist-upgraded to full sid? I noticed in your post http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/118350/#p118350 that something broke. What broke and how did you fix it?
oh. adding the testing repos screwed it up somehow. I only upgraded xfce4. I'll be re-installing sometime.
My system still works I just can't install some stuff.
I enabled sid then did a dist-upgrade . I lost the crunchbang panels and right click menu.
I am now running a vanilla xfce dock and enduring the default xfce right click menu or what I assume to be the plain debian xfce with cruchbang colors and wall paper.
It all seems to work but I lost some of the #!.
The external monitor for my laptop seems integrate better under xfce 4.8 as it now default to big screen.
Cheers
Scott

@brokenpike:
Xfce Settings -> Desktop Settings -> Icons -> change it to None. If its already set to None, change it to file/launcher icons (or something else), click Apply/OK and change it back.
Also there should be an option asking if you want Applications to be in the right-click menu. Make sure the boxed is checked.

This bug is fixed in 4.8 ![]()
Oh that was a bug? ![]()
I pinned the repos and upgraded just Xfce and Thunar. It all went okay but I don't have the network browser in Thunar. Does anyone else have this?
I meant to say that after I upgrade to 4.8 the application buttons that are in the normal crunchbang desktop menu disappeared. "Network" is in the desktop menu but chromium, thunar and terminator buttons are missing.
@omns Thunar-vfs was removed when I aptitude dist-upgraded a few minutes ago.
@brokenpike - Do you have desktop files for Chromium, Thunar, and Terminator inside /usr/share/applications?
@anonymous
They exist. The upgrade to xfce 4.8 replaced the #! desktop menu with the debian default xfce desktop. menu
Now instead of the webrowser being in the top menu it is only in the network sub menu.
