Re: Xfce 4.8 in sid

I don't think #! had its own separate .menu file for Xfce (correct me if I'm wrong).

On the Xfce panel, try right-clicking on the menu button and see what file it is using for the menu. If necessary change it to point to /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu. If that doesn't change anything, then maybe its a problem with the Debian package or something.

They exist.  The upgrade to xfce 4.8 replaced the #! desktop menu with the debian default xfce  desktop. menu

What you need are entires in /usr/share/applications for xfce4-file-manager.desktop etc. They seem to be missing from the xfdesktop4 package at the moment but can be created manually and placed in ~/.local/share/applications, then edit the menu to use them. If I have time I'll write a howto of how I've done it but it's a bit time consuming and I'm sure there's an easier way. Basically though I started with this wiki page and worked it out from there http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu

I've also sorted out my missing network  functionality in Thunar. I just needed to install gvfs-backends,
gvfs-bin and gvfs-fuse. The network browsing is sweet and works in the same way as a basic nautilus browser.

In the long run I didn't just switch my repos to sid and upgrade. Instead I have my system fairly extensively apt-pinned so I uninstalled Xfce4.6/Thunar first (not in an x session) then just installed what I needed from sid. Overall it worked out rather well smile

Just wondering why you didn't just switch to Sid. I'm happily running a standard Squeeze Xfce install now, but I've used Sid on other systems before and never had any problems. Is there some particular reason to be scared of it with the #! repos?

The way I've set up my repos and and pinned them will mean that as these packages work their way down through the repos they will eventually be picked up by the backports repo and my system will then be on stable packages again. A (very) rough overview of what I did can be seen here. Keep in mind that my Debian repo pinning is slightly different than what you'd need on a CrunchBang system.

Interesting. I guess I assumed that the backports repo didn't include major new versions of things like Xfce, even after they trickled down into testing. I've always kind of shied away from using backports repos because I figure I want the new libraries as well as the updated software.

But that's probably because I started off with Ubuntu and I'm used to the idea that my system might break and need to be reinstalled every six months or so...

Anyone else tried just switching to sid with no pinning to get Xfce 4.8, and if so how did it go?

Hmm, what would need pinned in #! that is different from your Debian install, Omns?
Perhaps the great Phillip could do a write-up for how to do this specifically for #!?  big_smile

Re: Xfce 4.8 in sid

I think the difference is just that #! includes an additional repo (Statler repo).
