Topic: Hello From Colombia - little introduction and report
Hi,
So yeah... #! my new favorite distro... i never saw this happening... but im fr#!ng glad: a distro that i can install and just tweak aesthetics to my preferences depending on my mood, since it comes with practically every application i end up installing in other distros, and starts working right away after installation with no need to fix anything or download or do any manual configuration (well, i did change file manager, i like pcmanfm more, though thunar is right next on my list, and i might also change the terminal to Tilda).
This is in my opinion definitely the best distro for me, and its actually been very pleasently used by my family members (windows users and apple snobs), so by the way, it might also be also great for newbies.
I currently have on my desktop, besides my new baby #!, Ubuntu 11.4, Debian Squeeze, and Win XP: deb and ubuntu are gonna be deleted to give #! more room.

Also besides the #! itself, the forums and IRC are great, and the Help section from the Main Menu... WOW, if other distros have this, why have i never used it!!! Thanks!!!!!

Now, I'm an average user (internet surfing and downloading, word procesing application, movie playback) and im not sure if i can do this here, but allow me to reptort my initial ups and downs with #! (CRUNCHBANG 10 "STATLER" R20110207, 32 bit, openbox).
First encounter: HP Mini 1000-1120LA (Netbook)
-Live USB worked great... i mean, i usually have to workaround to get things working after installing a new distro or using a livedistro. Wifi, flash websites, graphics, all worked flawlessly and smoothly outof the box with #!, i couldnt believe this. only bug seems to be timezone... its like 3 hours ahead.
-Installation (from USB) great... just as with the liveusb sesion everything* worked flawlessly out of the box. I note the everything word because, besides timezone not correct (i had to download ntpdate to fix issue), i did have a little bump that i really didn't expect: graphical installation didnt work. By this i mean is that to get #! installed i had to choose the normal nongraphical install, which i dont mind at all being pretty used to it with debian and freebsd, but it was weird since i was able to install debian squeeze from a usb in graphical mode with no issues. The extact bug, if i may say it that way, is that once i choose the 'Graphical' option, the screen just showed some mixed up green and red lines across the top of the screen but the installer never booted, so i had to force the reboot since ctrl+alt+delete wouldn't work. But as i say, nongraphical went great, and once it was installed, only problem i had to fix was timezone... everything else was ready to use. Ahhhhh, and what i loved the most... boots up, using autologgin, in under 30 secs...
Second encounter: HP Pavillion 751n (Desktop)
-So, no liveusb or usb installer has worked on this 'oldie', and though #! has surpassed my expectations, it was no different here. With this in mind i already had a dvd ready with #! in it.
-LiveDVD was great, no problems, just the time.
-Installation from DVD perfect! No issues at all with graphical mode. Just as on the mini, everything worked flawless and smooth without any tweaks! No distro had been this great on this desktop.
I do have to say that i got a bit disappointed when i was waiting for the #! logo to show up as it beautifully showed on the hp mini while it was booting up, but my video thingy on this machine with boot splashes has always been a pain in the deriere, no matter what distro.
But this new distro had something really cool regarding this issue: it has a low resolution graphical splash that it uses in case it cant use the default graphical boot (with ubuntu the screen goes mad during boot and gives me an out of range H and V range horrible message, which i usually have to manually fix to at least get a normal text based boot, and other distros just went into text mode bootup). So even though the boot spalsh anymation i get is not the same as the one on the mini, which i know i can cofigure to get working here, i dont mind at all the one its using, i rather have that than textmode. The lowreasolution graphical boot i talk about is basically a progress bar that increments inthree colors at the bottom of the scren and at the botom right it says "Statler CrunchBang". And just as with the hp mini, boots up in under 30 secs (Ubuntu, debian, and freebsd, between 35 and 45 secs... win xp, i never care, but im sure its between 45 and 60 secs)
Future encounters: TOSHIBA NB305 (Netbook)
-I will be posting on how it goes with this netbook as soon as i get my hands on it. Im still not sure if ist the dualcore version im getting, but ill confirm.
