Re: Discover music

I'll start.

I discovered the Diablo Swing Orchestra when I found Jamendo. (Note I see the url has a refuid in there I got from Jamendo directly. I left it in)

Re: Discover music

out of curiosity: what is the CC-scene like in south afrika (only heard from electronic stuff)?
are there any real musicians with real instruments performing traditional or let's say sophisticated music?
in other words: what is themost intersting CC-music from south afrika?

please don't be annoyed if this posting does not really respond to the initial question and digresses from the topic somehow...

p.s.: downloading the butcher's ballroom actually - what a *hehehe* name for an album...

Pancakes
1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 eggs, 1 cup of  milk, 3 tbs water, 1-2 tsp of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 apple, few grains of salt
Preheat your pan or griddle to about medium heat. Slowly combine the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, work in sliced apple. Each pancake should take about a minute or so on each side. Serve with plum jam, maple syrup, or powdered sugar

Re: Discover music

I love the ecclectic and experimental music of Chriss Onac: http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/CHRISS_ONAC.

Re: Discover music

The music scene in central North Carolina is surprisingly healthy.  (You'd never know it from listening to the radio here, though.)  Last year a group of local bands released a CC-licensed album of them covering each others' songs, appropriately titled Musical Chairs.

Re: Discover music

@beadmaze if there are any CC bands or live acts in S.Africa, I haven't heard or seen any yet. Could be to do with bandwidth costs here - A mate of mine has a 500 Meg cap, per month. ouch! smile

ty @ivanovnegro and @pvsage smile

Re: Discover music

Lately I really got interested in Atheist [ Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utqWrkVEQvI ] and Bathory [Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsHAS3aoK5k ]

The first is death metal mixed with jazz stuff

The second is a sort of one-man-band and the genre is a mix of death, epic, black and viking metal

I really enjoy both and now they're ones of my favourite bands

So it would cost him two months' bandwidth to download a single Live ISO?  Dude, that's harsh!

(I really, really want to plug Megan here, as she's my favorite indie singer/songwriter of all time and a friend, but just because she's unsigned doesn't mean she's not a commercial artist; all of her music carries a standard copyright. neutral )

I'm sure we won't moan about unsigned music, it's just harder for us to hear if there's nothing to listen to. Does Megan have songs on myspace or some such? One of my oldest mates plays guitar in a band called Blindsight, also unsigned. It's metal.

Re: Discover music

^ It's just the OP (hey, that was you!) specifically said "music under Creative Commons."  Anyway, I've plugged Megan Slankard in the "What are you listening to right now?" thread, so I guess there's no real harm in cross-pluggin'.

She *does* have songs on Myspace, she's on Facebook, and she occasionally gets twitty on Tweeter.

Her Facebook and Twitter pages follow the same naming convention as her Myspace account.

Re: Discover music

@kbmonkey damn. it'd be great if at least independent musicians would appreciate CC-licenses somehow...

i really don't want to be banned for spamming, but i'm co-running this (cc-licensed) netlabel:
www.headphonica.com
and i decided myself to only listen to free (as in speeech & beer) digital music from now on [two years ago]. there's enough out there, everywhere, just have a look at the www.freemusicarchive.org

and btw. my turntable plays all the other *real music* and i have CD and radio, not to mention all those tapes... smile

p.s.: learn to play an instrument and turn off all electronic devices. [*not seriously, but you know...*]

p.p.s.: i just realized that CDs are digital music too, but i meant these computer musics (mp3 & stuff like that)

I think that, of all commercial musicians, the independents are most deserving of our hard-earned cash.  They're also most likely to see a higher percentage of it go into their guitar string & ramen fund.

Re: Discover music

i slightly disagree here.
the most evil thing the music industry did in the last 50 years was not the audio-CD or the suppression of the listeners through copyright, but:
the invention of the popstar.
i mean folks like michael jackson, madonna, prince, gaga, bieber, younamethem...
and what's even more tricky: you mustn't be a good musician to get a popstar.

nowadays even [indie-]musicians theirself believe the holy goal [grail] is to play wembley or madison square garden with an audience of billions of people.
listeners think that every good musician should own at least one rolls royce.

IMO:
musicians do not automatically/neccessarily have to be able to make a living from making music. as the majority of them never did.
what musicians really need is an audience and applause.

so go ahead and listen to the musicians, go to their shows, you could even buy the music directly from the artist (at the show or via bandcamp), but don't ever pay the music industry for those lossy mp3 files...
it is impossible to produce vinyls non-commercially, but the mp3-data does not produce any costs - if you love music don't pay for the mp3.

there are many beautiful netlabels out there spreading lovely music under Creative Commons licenses. there's something for everyone of us.

to name just a few. they each have releases every now and then.

Re: Discover music

I think a lot of FOSS users get too emotionally invested in copyleft and CC.  What's next - free clothing?  Free beer?  Free housing?

I agree with you on your last point in the above snippet, and that pop stars are not necessarily musicians; however, I believe it is imperative for a good musician - someone who has real talent, and seems to have been put on this Earth to make the world a better placed with their music - to be able to earn a living with this talent.  I don't want to see my favorite artists waiting tables or painting houses just to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies.

By the way, Megan drives a rather modest Nissan sedan, and I'm perfectly happy with that.  But to me her music has real value, and I think she has every right to earn money on it.

Re: Discover music

@beadmaze thanks for your headphonica link, it looks neat and what I'm interested in!
And all those other links too, I need more bandwidth! Wonderbaar!

History has always portrayed the artist (written, visual, musical...) as someone who struggles to make a living.

I wonder how different the world would have been if corporates placed as much faith in artistic value, as they do in mercantile business.

I want to live in *that* world smile

Re: Discover music

Over the pas year, I have posted three CC tracks on soundcloud; all created with Linux. The most recent I composed with #! smile
You can listen here: http://soundcloud.com/vansgo
2 of the tracks are Ambient and 1 more Techno; Temporary Avacado(CBedition)
I am fascinated with sounds of oscillation and modulation to name two. Soon I hope to get a few more new tracks added.

Re: Discover music

I like 20lb Sounds http://danlynch.org/blog/2012/01/a-plan/

The singer/guitarist (Dan) also has plans for a solo release http://danlynch.org/blog/2012/01/a-plan/ and hosts a top fortnightly radio show of eclectic CC music here http://ratholeradio.org/.

Oh and occasionally he turns up on this forum!

Re: Discover music

check this out:

www.deepindub.org

it's a deephouse & tech netlabel, they have some pretty cool stuff over there.
they also provide completely FREE (as in beer...you guessed it wink ) releases !

http://www.deepindub.org/free-releases/

some of those downloads are linked to fileserve, thus quite a few download links won't work atm (thank you, kim schmitz ! sad ). but most likely you will find these releases as torrents (legal !), too.

I agree with the diablo swing orchestra selection too, although their not-CC album "Singalong songs for the damned and delirious" is better imo.
