^gutterslob, you wizard
love your shades!
Some Bloodlines, telling a dark tale of blood, sweat and pillaging of code.
^Pfft!! ... those aren't minimal (except for ScrotWM)
Well, compared to some WM's they are - it's a matter of degree, I suppose

lol. Some awesome suggestions there gutterslob
Oroborus
IceWM
And might i say they should all be on the first post as a massive list so its easier for people to see um all lol?
First, what is minimal? Is a panel/statusbar ok or is it too much? What about menus?
Also do not confuse minimal with light-weight. Probably all the tiling window managers could be considered light-weight:

However I would consider a wm like ratpoison to also be minimal since it has no panels or menu (afaik, please correct me if Im wrong).

Meh!! ... DVTM ![]()
@Anon
Don't go twisting your knickers about minimal vs lightweight. All you have to do is listen to the guy that made lwm
Introduction
lwm is a window manager for X that tries to keep out of your face. There are no icons, no button bars, no icon docks, no root menus, no nothing: if you want all that, then other programs can provide it. There's no configurability either: if you want that, you want a different window manager; one that helps your operating system in its evil conquest of your disc space and its annexation of your physical memory.

That picture's awesome - if only because fvwm is near the center of the wm universe - ![]()

Meh. That image leaves out the original source of the GUI WM - the Xerox Alto.

Great diagram! Very informative... do you know what's the source of it? ... i saw ratpoison at 2004 but wasn't ratpoison around at 2000?

@Gutterslob - wondrous diagram but you left "incestuous" out of the list of descriptors...
Fascinating historical perspective - thanks!

Well, I won't argue with you there. Not quite sure on the diagram's historical accuracy and all, but Xerox does have roots in nearly everything tech, afterall. Often read those articles about the current Apple vs Google vs MS patent war fad and sometimes wish someone would post "Xerox should just sue all 3 moogerfoogers!!" in the fanboy infested comments section.

Had that saved a long time ago, so I had to do some crazy scroogling. I actually found the diagram on a different site, but I think it originally came from here: http://www.gilesorr.com/wm/
Then info's definitely a bit dated, and like I mentioned to pvsage, I can't vouch for the document's accuracy. I first tried Ratpoison at around 2005 (out of necessity due to my main laptop getting stolen and having to fall back on a borrowed one that had a malfunctioning trackball/touchpad and was too slow for any available version of Windows at the time), but I'm pretty sure it was out before then. It's possible that releases tagged "alpha" or "beta" are not considered in the timeline.

Oi, oi.... this here's a family-friendly site.
We don't wanna offend the Nascar mob with the incestuous comment now, do we? =P

Well, I'm sure Xerox stole things (copier tech?) from IBM, and vice versa. Jim Marshall stole amp designs from Leo Fender and Charlie Watkins, who stole their schematics from tube manufacturers' datasheets (which were arguably public domain in the first place). I guess I'm just saying everyone steals from everybody, and I really have nothing to add to the discussion on minimal WMs.
minimal -> awesome
light-weight -> dwm
superior choice -> tty0 with no multiplexer because multitasking is bloat
also tmux > screen
minimal -> awesome
Since when were desktop environments minimal?! ![]()
minimal -> awesome
light-weight -> dwm
Shouldn't that be reversed seeing as awesome has more features than dwm?

I thought minimal was more features and lightweight was faster/less CPU intensive.
Anyway, I usually use either subltle, i3, or openbox, all of which are relatively minimal/lightweight.

Based on the definition, wouldn't minimal mean less features? Anyways sorry for being pedantic.

You are right, I guess lightweight doesn't have to mean minimal but almost always minimal is lightweight.
If you want minimal, just use one tty with tmux and don't start X.
