@biogeek

Ah that's great, I was wanting to convert my families kitchen computer into a statler kiosk.  Only question was "Will office 2007 run well under wine?"  The winehq app database wasn't exactly clear on that.. Thanx for your info, I'll be reformatting the sickly proprietary machine when I visit home again this year.

rstrcogburn,

I can't vouch that it will work for you and your computer.  I cannot vouch for any other MS Office applications either.  Don't take anything for granted till you try it for yourself.

My setup is  a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, 1.86GHz core 2, 160Gb HDD, external 250Gb USB hard disk, 3gig RAM, lexicon alpha 3 audio interface and edirol midi interface.

Works flawlessly, especially wifi which was a bit troublesome when I was giving windows 7 a go.

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

I'm running #! on my old Toshiba Satellite A 10 Notebook from 2003/2004 (bought spring 2004 as a phase-out model):
Intel Pentium 4-M 2.4 GHz, 40 GB HDD, RAM: 512 MB, Intel 855GM Graphics, some old Ralink PCMIA WiFi Card inside (with poor range, but works out of the box since Ubuntu 7.10).

This Laptop runs and runs and runs. I used it daily for ours over several years but it still runs (with 2nd Battery and HDD). It always gets very hot, but takes no damage. Good keyboard and display. Great compatibility with Linux (just worked 2004 flawlessly with SuSe 9.0 !). With #! no trouble with graphics (unlike with Ubuntu 10.04).

With #! it runs quite fast again, can still be used for everyday work. Hope it will see it's 10th birthday. Love this notebook.

Desktop:     Dell Inspirion 530 - Xubuntu 12.04 | Debian Wheezy (Openbox)
Notebooks: Toshiba Satellite Pro A 10 - #!-Statler,

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

I'm on a Gateway LT2106u netbook...
Acer motherboard.  Looks like I have a PCI express slot available... and it looks like they even label which connector on the mobo it is...  One day, maybe I'll see if I can utilize that...
2GB DDR2 Ram, 667 MHz
Atom 450 1.66GHz (64 bit processor, but currently I only have 32 bit OSes)
~50GB for #!
~90GB for Windows 7

all thanks to dmidecode

Using statler Xfce and Midori, I can have wayyy too many browser tabs open, check my email, and listen to last.fm without seeing a decrease in snappiness.  And snappiness is what I am after.  Some say it can't be done on a netbook.  Some haven't tried #!

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

Welcome #! Community!

Been using Ubuntu 10.10, Mint, Lubuntu,  for a bit now, it is not too bad.  I needed something a bit faster, snappier and #! worked out in my favor.

System:

Your basic Netbook specs (Atom, intel integrated, 1GB ram, etc.,)

Works great for netbooks!

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

I'm on a pimped out IBM Thinkpad T42 with 1.7GHz Pentium M CPU, 2GB RAM and 60GB HD. Wifi is supplied by an Atheros card using ath5k driver. All hardware works out of the box with the exception of the modem which needs the slmodem driver.

This machine's like a tank and runs fantastic with !# booted off a USB stick and contemplating wiping off Aptosid that I currently have installed on this machine. I'll look into the newest Wine build to test Office 2007 as that is the only Microsoft app I really need for work stuff.

The fonts are crisp and clean on the notebook's 14.1" LCD, much like Windows 7's..another great touch.

!# may be all I need on this laptop for the things I use it for so keep up the good work Corenominal smile

All works out of box on statler -minus hibernation.  Who hibernates anyways.  Suspend works great.

The wireless works great since Papanominal includes firmware-iwlwifi, but this is a simple apt-get install away from a squeeze base.  This is a great linux machine.

Edit:
removed the fingerprint reader since my officedepot model doesn't have it.

New here...

I've got:

my Laptop:
Name:  Lenovo S10.3
Processor:  Intel Atom N455 (1.66Ghz)
Screen:  10.1" (1024x600)
RAM:  2GB DDR3
Graphics:  Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
Network:  BCM 4313 BGN Wireless
Other:  3 x USB2.0, Card Reader, D-Sub video out, built-in Webcam

#Comments:
It came with Windows 7 pre-installed.... which broke the second time I booted it.
I wiped it out and installed #!.
No problems since. Almost everything works: audio, video, microphone, etc.
The only things that don't work are hibernate and suspend.

my Desktop
Name:  HP Pavilion (of some sort)
Processor:  AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor - 2.7Ghz (over clocked from 2.3ghz)
Screen:  Westinghouse LCD (1400x1050)
RAM:  3 GB DDR2
HDD:  500GB
Optical Drive:  DVD/CD (RDL)
GPU: nVidia  9600GSO
Sound:  Built-in
Network:  Netgear USB

#Comments: No problems. Again, it recognized my webcam, audio, even my Xbox 360 controller.  Took a little tweaking to get the graphics card going, but now it's running just fine. Does anyone know a good program to over-clock an nVidia card?  (PM please)
I'd like to point out that this was the ONLY linux distro I've tried that has worked with audio without any tweaking.

Fujitsu-Siemens Futro D100

I got a couple of  these Oldies for experiments and exercises - the second piece I was successful: Installed a 80GB HDD, plugged a DVD and installed CrunchBang #! 32Bit OpenBox Edition.

Great adventure, the old computer running Linux!

Hardware:
Intel Chipset 815E
Micro-ATX mainboard Fujitsu-Siemens D1215
Intel Pentium III 1.0 GHz
Front Side Bus 133 MHz
Second-level cache integrated on die 256 KB
512 MB SDRAM
Fast IDE/Ultra DMA-100 (capability for 2 * 2 drives)
80 GB Samsung HDD
LAN Intel Pro 100
Audio on board, AC'97 Fujitsu-Siemens AD1885
Graphics integrated in chipset

Datasheet: http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupp … o_d100.pdf

Usability with CrunchBang: smile The Oldie - built in 2003 - is really fast for Browser, E-Mail-Client, AbiWord, ... phoenix from the ashes!

Other:  3x USB 3.0, Built-in webcam, MMC/SD/SDHC card reader

Comments: It's quite fast with Statler; most basic functions are fine out-of-the-box (sound, video, touchpad, wired LAN, et al) other than having to get/install wl or brcm80211 for wireless. It's been quite a while since I've worked with linux, so I'm still reading, working on, and getting to a few things:

  • FN hotkeys [SOLVED]

  • Power management [SOLVED]

  • Can't connect to unsecured university wireless via radius portal [Using workaround]

  • Touchpad recognized as Logitech PS/2 mouse [SOLVED]

  • Wireless requires reboot after suspend [SOLVED]

  • Horizontal scrolling is flaky [SOLVED]

On a side note, cheers for providing so much information; Crunchbang is well on its way to becoming my primary OS!

Wireless NIC: TP-LINK TL-WN722N IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 High Gain

#! runs fantastically on this. Dual booting Windows 7.
It did require a fair amount of setup and tweaking to get everything running smoothly. But that's to be expected with the kind of build I have.

Also running Statler on a little Asus Eee PC 1000HE and it's running fantastically.
I've put every OS/Distro under the rainbow and #! has been my favorite.
Just about everything works OOTB: Fn Keys, NIC, etc... Very painless install and setup and running like a champ.

I have Crunchbang running on a pretty old piece of hardware.

Name: HP/Compaq TC1000
Processor: 1 GHz Transmeta Crusoe 5800 512-KB cache
Screen: 10.4" TFT
RAM: 768MB DDR1 RAM (Upgraded from 256)

The TC1000 is a tablet computer and with quite a bit of work I got the stylus to work pretty good. I will be posting in the complete set of instructions to the forums just as soon as I find the right place to post it.
