Topic: Smoker's Corner

*cough*

If there is a coffee group, distro-hoppers anonymous and a beer drinker's circle, I want to have a smoker's corner! tongue

So, have a smoke. No matter if homegrown or pipe, cigarette or cigar.

What's your brand, how many packages an hour? big_smile

Re: Smoker's Corner

Hehe, a pack a day. Camels... Used to smoke Lucky Strike, but ironically, here in the states they are very rare. Particularly in Vegas, you can only get them at Casinos (I would imagine they carry them for all the international tourist) and they are close to $8/pack.

I still love a good cigar.
Macanudo Robusts are always great.
Just not as often as before.
A great way to relax.

Re: Smoker's Corner

Hand rolled tobacco for me.

Re: Smoker's Corner

Bali Shag and Benson & Hedges atm. Bailey's smokes are extremely cheap and taste better than any other pack of smokes that costs less than $5 IMO, plus they're a small privately owned Tobacco company, so you aren't supporting some theoretically corrupt corporation when you buy their stuff. Not that I have any compelling reason to make any attacks on Mr. Morris, Winston Salem, or any other Tobacco company, it's just nice to support the little guy when you can IMO big_smile

Edit: is this thread restricted to discussion of tobacco?

Re: Smoker's Corner

Nice, there are indeed some smokers here smile

You should all come to China, a pack starts at 6 Yuan (that's something like 1$ or 70 Euro-cent, give or take) but dynamically going up to 60, 80, even 100 Yuan or more. I find it quite interesting that cigarettes have different prices here. How is that in the States?

But they really have superb tobacco here, I must admit. Even the cheapest brand is more than just smokeable.
Brands are status symbols here, so if you are member of the "Party", you would smoke "Chungwha" and pay around 10$ per pack (and then show off... roll ) My favourite brand Shuangxi (Double Happiness - smoked at wedding parties) is priced 8 Yuan, so I can afford to smoke more than necessary. *cough*

mynis01: it's not restricted to tobacco, of course big_smile But be careful, teh netz never forgets.

I pay about 15 euros per month for tobacco, 2 euros for rolling paper and filters, so the financial incentive to stop smoking is kinda gone for ever.

But seriously, since I started hand rolling, I can only bring myself to smoke a cigarette in times of extreme need, it's too dry and has no taste. And yeah, Bali Shag makes good tobacco, but I don't care for the scented stuff, so I smoke a local variety.

The reason for different prices in China are most likely taxes. In Europe and the US, about 95 percent of the price is down to taxes and duties, so you get a difference of one euro or dollar at the most.

#! Forums is really an amazing place! Now we have a tobacco section, nice. But this place is only for +18. tongue

el_koraco: Do the people look strange at you because of rolling in Croatia? In Serbia it is not common, they always think I rolle another stuff. smile

For me it is Van Nelle, 5,50 Euros the pack in Germany. I think 12 cigarettes per day normally but when I drink it can be also 20. I love hand rolled.

In Serbia I buy always the blue French Gauloises for just 1,30 Euros. big_smile

Re: Smoker's Corner

Actually, a lot of poeple have started rolling their own here, because Croatia has much steeper prices than Serbia. Almost double the price, and it's constantly on the rise, so folks are jumping ship.

Of course, we should all quit....right? Because no one could possibly enjoy smoking for extended periods of time. We're all just addicts who have been disillusioned into believing that we enjoy smoking. [/sarcasm]

Re: Smoker's Corner

Mild Seven or Lark. Around 2.5 to 3 packs per week. Trying to cut it down further, mainly cos I wanna take my fitness/endurance a level higher. Legalize ganja in my country and I'll quit tobacco this instant.

Correct!! It's a disgusting addiction, but at least we don't chew it ... ugh

Re: Smoker's Corner

The members of my non-immediate family have always put a great deal of effort to conceal their smoking habbits from me (no one in my immediate family smokes). When I was around five or six years old I walked in on my Grandpa smoking some pipe tobacco. Not even knowing what tobacco was, I said "what is that? that smells really good!" Naturally, when I came to be around fourteen years of age, I started smoking. I quit when I was seventeen until I was twenty one, cold turkey. Then I decided that it would be ok as long as I made it a point not to smoke more than two cigarettes a day. So far so good. I've quit smoking for months at a time since then, sometimes due to illness, sometimes just because I felt like it.

Anybody tried e-smoking already? wink

I tried it, it's stupid. I mean if it helps you quit or cut back, then cool. But for me, nothing can replace the sensation of lighting up some tasty hand rolled unfiltered shag tobacco, be it patches, gum, or an IV filled with nicotine.

Re: Smoker's Corner

Don't know if it's appropriate to mention -- sorry if not -- since 2005, I'm a chain-chewer of Perrigo nicotine gum, made in Denmark.  I was utterly unable to quit smoking, but I chew this stuff all day every day with a great deal of satisfaction.  I'm still fully addicted.  If I smoke a cigarette, I don't get a buzz from it like you would if you hadn't smoked for awhile.

Reading this thread made me wish I could smoke again, but it caught up with me finally, and I enjoy my Perrigo!

Re: Smoker's Corner

@tranche: I don't think this thread is intended to be any kind of structured intellectual discussion, so you're fine. If you don't mind me asking, how did smoking "catch up" with you. I'm assuming some kind of respiratory issue?

Re: Smoker's Corner

ahhhh nice thread!

i smoke Van Nelle Stevig (means 'Firm' in Dutch). this is Van Nelle Half-Zwaar ('Medium' in Dutch) but they can't call it medium anymore because it sounds like it is not so bad for you :). i always have orange rizzla rolling papers. no filter... first time i saw anyone smoke shag with a filter was in Italy this summer... weird :)

started smoking about... i think 6/7 years ago. i used to smoke weed daily for 2 years, than quit smoking weed, found out i was addicted to having smoke coming out of my mouth and stuff, so to kick the weed-habit started smoking tobacco. that's a much harder habit to kick, but i'm not really trying. smoke about 2 packs a week, for around EUR 6 a pack (including papers).

i do still smoke weed occasionally during weekends (and not afraid to confess this, as a Google search for my name turns up at least 2 drug-related sites already :)

@machinebacon: been to China on holiday a couple of years ago, and indeed the cigarettes are really cheap, and good. really enjoyed smoking in China, had no idea you lived there!

Re: Smoker's Corner

I gave up on 29th July 2010 (after 27 yers smoking!) and have been smoke-free for over a year.  I used to smoke roll-ups but now, it's just Philip who has the dirty habit in the house! sad

Re: Smoker's Corner

@rhowaldt - weed is quite normal in the NL big_smile

when I was 20 years younger than now, I used to smoke Javaanse Jongens, sometimes Van Nelle, good dutch brands ^^ had to save money those days, as student, so rolling was a good way to save a few EUR (those days Deutsche Mark) a month and investing it into something useful, beer for example. tongue
When I got a regular salary, I changed to L&M (which was a bit cheaper than other brands, they had 1-2 cigs more in a package). Then left Europe and been living here for ~5 years smile

@bobobex

I guess most of us tried to quit and didn't have the balls to stay smoke-free, so hats off to you. Do you have a hot recommendation how to quit pain-free? big_smile We all know we should....

Re: Smoker's Corner

@rhowaldt:

I use filters, like it more, without I have all this stuff in my mouth and the cigarette is going humid also.
We smoke the same tobacco but I prefer the stronger variant, it is the blue package. I do not know if there is a difference to the Netherlands.

Re: Smoker's Corner

@machinebacon: weed is very normal and very high quality here in the Netherlands. i'm happy about that, even though i quit smoking weekends as well recently. want to avoid getting used to stuff and getting into a habit. one addiction/habit (smoking) is enough for me.

@ivanonegro: mine is light-blue. the 'Heavy' variant is dark-blue. i think you also have light, but it is off-white or something.
smoking shag without a filter is not a problem if you are not a wet smoker (so you don't wet the tip with your lips) and if you learn to roll properly so the tobacco does not come out of the wrong end. sometimes it does come out, but i just pull that part out and fix it up. during smoking, i keep an (half-conscious) eye on tobacco strands i suck near the tip so they all stay inside the cigarette and out of my mouth. don't swallow that stuff, it will have you drink water endlessly to get the foul taste out of your mouth and throat.
edit: reading that through, i understand your filter smile

Re: Smoker's Corner

Pipe and roll your own smoker here. Though I don't tend to smoke my pipe as much these days as a good tobacconist is getting increasingly harder to find.

I'm smoking less than I used to, but more than I'd like and have been to see the Nurse who runs the stop smoking program nearby. It turns out she reckons I should carry on smoking for the time being. big_smile Mainly as she believes that with the stress of moving house in the next month, and my dissertation, that it would be a really bad time to try quitting,

Rollies are becoming more prevalent in England too, as people try and save money. When I was younger I started on rollies very quickly to save some money, and because I found I preferred the taste. It had the added bonus that if someone tried to bum a fag off me, they soon declined when I said I only had rollies, sadly that's changed these days and I don't get to keep my precious tobacco to myself as much any more. sad

Re: Smoker's Corner

It's hard to say how much I smoke, it's different every day. I usually have Chesterfield tobacco and Columbus filter tubes. When I'm on the run, I usually try to get Benson & Hedges or Chesterfield, but most stores and vending machines here don't have the good stuff, so it's L&M or Luckies then. I used to prefer John Player Special, but - believe it or not - to many memories to this brand are connected to a broken relationship. In fact I started smoking because of this significant other (and vice versa), we met at a club, both drunk and searching for somebody to give us a smoke. We went "hunting" together from this very day, but when we broke up, I didn't catch a puff for almost a year.

When I worked in an ISP's DSL clearing department, we had a forced screen break of 5mins every hour, so this was probably my smoky time, with a pack every two days. Now I'm in a smoker's office at work - we all three in the IT department smoke - so the urge to stand up and leave the building isn't as big as when you're chained to a cubical. However, I usually go outside, it's more of an indulgence if you can just concentrate on nothing else but the weird feeling in your lungs and the smoke blurring your vision, while watching the sample receiving department wallow in work.

I'm so meta, even this acronym

Agreed... the "e-cigarettes" just don't satisfy the same. And the gum is ridiculous (had to use it on a long flight one time).
