Topic: Your "other" distro.

We just got a laptop in the family that will be shared by 2-3 people, so I decided to put a Linux on it for myself. I allready have #! on my PC, so I decided to dig through my install disk stash. I tried some distros OpenSUSE, Ubuntu 11.04, Debian, finally installing Mint Debian. But after half a day of calibrating Mint I gave up on experimenting and installed good ol' Statler. Now I'm stuck with two computers running #!.

So what I'm asking is what other distro do you people use regularly next to CrunchBang?

Re: Your "other" distro.

Used Mint 10 for probably month and a half. Guessing Mint 9 LTS version would be a good introduction to nix for many people. Though, one it's based on buntu and I strongly dislike buntu and 2 on a lower spec system takes too long tweaking it to make it run well. Got tired of having to tweak it, so just installed AntiX and it was blowing Mint 10 out of the water, out of the box in terms of system overhead. Having an ancient box myself, spent mucho time investigating light weight gnu/nix. Crunchbang is da bomb ... Antix, also thought it was great. Have a general rule of thumb I try to keep to. Only 3 nix OS's installed at any given time. Plus Xp is on here too. 4 OS's for one old computer .. seems to be pushing practicality already though, shrugs.

3  gnu/nix distros I have.

1. #! o course.
2. Slitaz Linux 3.0
3. Vector Linux light 6.0

Some common cbiz abbreviations. This will save me time and yet @ same time tell folks what the babble is supposed to mean.

Re: Your "other" distro.

I generally like Debian based stuff, so I have three Debian based installs (stable: #!, testing: LMDE, sid: aptosid - which is my main OS) at the moment.

@Jimmy: Out of curiosity, ever tried UHU Linux? I once tested their "Bummm!" version and I was pleasantly surprised.

Nothing right in the left brain. Nothing left in the right brain.

Re: Your "other" distro.

I'm forcing myself to learn .rpm based distros in my spare time these days. I prefer debian though, and have recently enjoyed using LMDE XFCE testing on other people's machines.

I'm too scared to venture far from Debian. I am goofing around with Virtualbox though.

@machinebacon: Not really, but I am thinking about giving Frugalware a try.

Re: Your "other" distro.

Whenever possible, I prefer #! for all of my stuff.

1. #!
2. Slitaz 3.0 (If I ever get the resolution down correctly)
3. Puppy Linux

Last resort - Windows 7

Re: Your "other" distro.

Slitaz-aircrack is hands down the most useful distro for pen drives imo.

Re: Your "other" distro.

I use Fedora and Salix on my netbooks, #! on my desktops.

Re: Your "other" distro.

I use just Debian with Xfce, no more other stuff, but would it be something else it would be #! of course.

With respect for Windows, no thanks, Windows free since years. big_smile

I still dual boot XP Pro, 'cause I can't make my ancient graphics card to work on any distro (Except Knoppix for some reason), and I need it for gaming. But I don't really have anything against Windows, when I had Ubuntu 10.10 with XP Pro, Windows was even more stable than Ubuntu. Plus the file/drive system (C,D,E drives, system stuff is in C:\Windows) is more understandable for me than the Linux/Unix way.

Re: Your "other" distro.

Running Xubuntu Lucid as my "main," experimenting with SalixOS as well. I wrote a big ol' blog post about it. Checking outside the familiar world of Debian and 'Buntu out of curiosity, found this very cool little Slackware based gem!

Re: Your "other" distro.

The last one I liked was Fedora. But right now I only have #!

Re: Your "other" distro.

Arch with KDE. I’m a member of the Finnish KDE-l10n team and need an up-to-date version of KDE to check what comes out; and anyway, if it were lighter I might have KDE on all my machines tongue

My armada: Arch (desktop, test machine), Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 (laptop, netbook, server), Mythbuntu 11.04 (HTPC), Windows 7 Ultimate (test machine)

Re: Your "other" distro.

Arch with Compiz standalone on the desktop and Arch with Openbox on the netbook.

I'm so meta, even this acronym

Re: Your "other" distro.

#! is the only distro at the moment I am using but I have slitaz on my flash drive just in case something goes wrong.

Re: Your "other" distro.

If I had a choice, I would only use #!, but I have to VirtualBox Windows (*shutters*) for some proprietary software that I use for my research.

Some microsoft sin called windows. lol

Re: Your "other" distro.

My microsoft sinned by windoozing, so I got rid of it and installed Linux. Anyways I do want to try slackware or a slackware derived distro.

Yup, that's my plan as well. And some day I'll get around to installing Arch.

Re: Your "other" distro.

lol ... it's turned into a wish list distro thread too.

+1 for aspiring to experiment with Arch eventually. Not up to the challenge atm, technically speaking or willing to invest the kinda time that'd be involved. When so many great gnu/nix distros are available and up and running out of the box.

Also wondering about Debian 6. Still have a ways to go in figuring out how to personalize it more too. Also guessing it'd be more time consuming customizing a pure Debian install to include only most the stuff I want and trim out default bloat that wouldn't please the resource miser I've become. Just betting Debian 6, could be made into a super stable + super light weight linuxy goodness.

Afterthought: Guess such a thing already exists ... Isn't it called Crunchbang ? big_smile Vector linux is slackware based me thinks. Though distrowatch says it's optimized for i486. Personally like VL light 6.0. Lightest linux I've ever found. Idles at 43mbs on this old dinosaur PC.

Re: Your "other" distro.

Salix is Slackware-based. And unlike most Slackware derivatives (Zenwalk, etc), it remains fully compatible with Slackware. But "friendlier" than Slackware for newbies.

Thank you for the suggestion. Going to give that blog post of yours a read. I would like some insight on the salix world

Re: Your "other" distro.

I like Slackware. And most Slack-based distros. Messed around with Salix a little bit, it's not bad. Slax is impressive as a live system, and works fairly well is installed to the hdd.

Just today I installed #! on my buddy's netbook. Some malware took over his XP install so he decided it was finally time to learn linux. I think it's awesome he was willing to jump right in. He's a complete linux newbie, but I told him about the forums here, so hopefully he joins up the next couple of days.

I've screwed up more than a few slackware installs... I still remember the first time I wanted to be one of the cool kids and run my distro on the -current tree.... Needless to say I reformatted. Would've probably taken me a few days to sort everything out otherwise.
