Topic: Bug? unetbootin from repo does not work

I don't know which version is in the repositories, maybe somebody with more knowledge of apt can determine from the below

wim@aa0:~$ sudo apt-cache policy unetbootin
unetbootin:
  Installed: 408-1
  Candidate: 408-1
  Version table:
     471-2 0
        100 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main i386 Packages
 *** 408-1 0
        990 http://packages.crunchbanglinux.org/statler/ statler/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
wim@aa0:~$

Trying to create a bootable Zenwalk 7.0 Live does not work. Waited over 2 hours without any progress wink
Errors thrown after restarting unetbootin with the -d option boil down to 'too many open files'. I downloaded the latest (unetbootin-linux-555) from the unetbootin site and it works fine.

A little research showed that this is (part of) a known bug; see https://bugs.launchpad.net/unetbootin/+bug/491020 reported in december 2009; I get the errors regarding pipes and sockets.

If this is indeed a bug, I would suggest that the current version is removed from the repositories (and obviously I like to see it replaced by the newer version wink but I can live with the manual download)

Additional info:
Acer Aspire One with 8GB ssd (about 2.7GB free) and 512 MB memory running crunchbang statler 32 bit

Re: Bug? unetbootin from repo does not work

I've got the same issue with unetbootin so I just downloaded the iso's that I wanted and used my wife's Windoze machine to install the iso's on a usb stick.  But I'd rather have unetbootin available on my machine.  Therefore, I've got a question.

When I try to install the latest version, I am told that I need to upgrade several libraries.  How safe is it to upgrade libraries when I am only installing the latest version of an app (in this case, unetbootin)?  I need an updated libqtcore4 and libstdc++6.  Will updating these libraries give me problems with other apps?  I can figure out most things when it comes to fixing my linux system, but I'm clueless when it comes to dependencies.  Thanks.

CrunchBang 10 “Statler” r20110207 blog notes advise:

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR UNETBOOTIN USERS: CrunchBang images will more than likely fail to work if copied to USB devices with Unetbootin. Please use the recommended method for creating USB installation media.

Re: Bug? unetbootin from repo does not work

^ The OP is asking how to make a Zenwalk usb boot with unetbootin, not CrunchBang.

I downloaded the earlier mentioned 555 version directly from the unetbootin website, made it executable and ran it (with root privileges). It did not require any additional libraries or whatever and the zenwalk flash disk works.

Nobody mentioned CrunchBang images wink

So why are we having this discussion on a CrunchBang forum? hmm

Because the Unetbootin from the repositories in CrunchBang doesn't work? It's, like, in the title.

Around the CB forums all distros are welcome! Even though we might give best support to each other on the debian based ones.  I guess you already know that, but I just got a good place to mention it, so all the new users can read it.
Sorry if I sound rude, I do not mean to be. English is just a second language for me.

I would have thought that bugs are best reported on a bug tracker such as https://bugs.launchpad.net/crunchbang/

I quite agree that discussion on all distros is welcome. smile  However, I am concerned that mixing info on different distros within one forum may cause some confusion for newbies.  Possibly we could have a different sub-section within CrunchBang forums for "other distros"?

BTW, you were not rude at all and I welcome all feedback. wink

Re: Bug? unetbootin from repo does not work

The problem is how unetbootin formats the name of the drive, it makes a bad reference/link/path. If you leave the name blank when you format with Gparted, it will work. The only iso I've had fail is arch, and that was because i named it something during format.

Might well be; this section is called feedback (what I gave in the opening post) and suggestions (which I also gave in the opening post) big_smile

If this is indeed a bug I can report it (if they don't ask too many difficult questions like which version (I barely know what version of #! I'm using or the version of unetbootin). The reason for posting here is that I might have done something totally stupid, that there is something related to the low specs of this machine or whatever else there is that can go wrong.

I've got one confirmation so it's going the right way wink

Re: Bug? unetbootin from repo does not work

For a trivial self contained binary like unetbootin, there really aren't a whole lot of advantages to pulling it from the debian repos instead of just downloading the newest version every time you intend to use it. The only one I can think of is security and piece of mind.

I think this is outdated and no longer used here. It was for the Ubuntu base.

Zill wrote:

I think that is what the other forums are doing and #! is different and I like it for that. Anyway you could post that idea into the Feedback section.

I'd browse your local phonebook for a local mental hospital, that is where all the people {are, belong}, who really understood apt.

So it looks like the lack of activity on the launchpad site is due to the change from Ubuntu to Debian.

Other threads here seem to indicate that we don't really have a bug-tracker now for the specific #! bits.  I guess we just have to use the Debian tracker for the "pure" Debian parts of CrunchBang.

Re: Bug? unetbootin from repo does not work

^ Yup, I think so.
