Thank you all for your replies!
As gutterslob says on the thread, there's not much to be said. You got a .desktop file for autostarting the desired apps if you're using GDM, and the rest is .Xdefaults and so on. I recommend a suite of CLI apps, like mc, moc, mpd, calcurse, centerim, mcabber, mutt, mplayer, rtorrent and so on. They're all keyboard-centric, so you can do all your non-browsing without touching the mouse. or if you use vimperator for FF, or a browser like uzbl, you don't need the keyboard at all.
Those applications were the reasons for myself to try out a tiling window manager, I went away from graphical programs more and more. Except browsing the net (.. which I do with Firefox) I'm doing pretty much everything via the command line now (moc, ssh, vim .. there is not much more I do need, except some shellcommands.). A full desktop environment or even a GUI like OpenBox was getting more and more sort of a waste of ressources.
I'm not trying to be aggressive or suggest it's complicated, but he asked about scrotwm, and .xdefaults has nothing to do with that. I'm sorry if I appeared as unnecessary aggressive.
I don't want to "use" things, I want to use and understand them. I really want to dig into this topic and so I have no problems with more information than I asked for - but your demur also helped me .. so thanks!

I apologize for going off-topic. Just feel free to ask if you have any questions, preferably in that ScrotWM thread Benny (el_koraco) linked to. Apologies for any confusion caused.
No need to apologize, I like hearing people's opinion about things. I knew, that it's a (more or less) long way to reach stylism and "goodlookingness" (Sorry for creating new words!), but hey .. the way is the goal!
For further questions, I'll stick to the thread you suggested!
