Topic: Potential Desktop Image of Sun in Ultraviolet Light

Here's an image

which can be found at the bottom of the page, here  http://news.discovery.com/space/have-yo … 10928.html
that I thought someone might be able to use as a desktop.  smile

Maybe somebody can add the ultraviolet effect?

Don't you just hate it when you feel your sense of humor is wasted??  neutral

Wasted? In what way?

@dubois
I'd have to say Awebb's humor is spot-on and hilarious in a witty way, so I doubt the humor was wasted.

Re: Potential Desktop Image of Sun in Ultraviolet Light

Sometimes I can't help it. Yesterday I read a paper about frames in cognitive linguistics. One of the examples was "orphan". I automatically thought about package management and how inconvenient it is, when a maintainer won't show up with the latest updates. The example, of course, was about children without parents. The example went nil this moment, it tried to be as close to common sense as possible. Although I learnd a more relevant lesson about frames, than I would have from the original intention, it left a somewhat awkward feeling behind.

^ and ^^  OK.  I didn't want to have to write a paragraph explaining what I wanted to say without it sounding like I was sucking up to someone.  Awebb reminds me so much of one of my younger brothers in that he posses a keen intellect, and a rapier-like wit which is something I appreciate.  Which is something sunfizz98 appreciates, too.  I just thought that this morning it was lost on the joke he was playing on me -- playing a joke with words and images was clever, but over the years I've seen better and come to expect better.  So my opening sentence makes sense now: I didn't want to have to write a paragraph explaining what I wanted to say without it sounding like I was sucking up to someone.  I'm not a sorry SOB but if I was there'd be no doubt in anyone's mind whether or not I was a first-class sorry SOB.  tongue

You lost me, but I honestly thought that picture you posted could have had more justice in the "cool random internet 1.0" thread.

Yes, I admit... the timestamp here says 7am, so I might get out of this number by claiming it happened before my first grande latte injection.

Me, too.  Let's just let it go by the wayside...

Eh it's about fun, isn't it. Let's get back to the picture... it reminds me of my first telescope I had. I had a filter which was supposed to project UV images of the moon. I tried to look at the sun with the sun filter in front of it. It hurt. Never do that. Not even if you're 12.

^ There are some really big sunspots easily viewable now and if someone hasn't never seen them for real I'd suggest trying it using the pinhole method* for goodness sakes!  I have an older model Meade 3.5** inch with a homemade sun-filter, my other brother made for me.  BTW what kind-size scope did you have?

Oh that was a long time ago... It was half a meter long, about 20cm diameter and it came with 20 or so filters. I even had a T18 lense to watch the neighbors.
