Halfway? Halfway twixt what and what? If it's halfway twixt two metropolitan areas, maybe Dallas and Fort Worth, then it might be the DFW airport at Grapevine. Doesn't look like it though.

The rust-colored area to the left is perplexing...looks like the scan missed a color, since the demarcation is such a straight line.

it's not salt as in kitchen salt and not on an island. Hint : you find a mini reference in the "show your dog" thread: search for cotton.

Could be just another source from the satellite 
I used the online version of Google Maps, maybe it looks different in GoogleEarth.

I guess maybe a little misleading, but I meant a Military surplus for the appropriate ventilation attire.
Chernobyl is correct-ish
