Topic: #!'ers Global Sounds and Rhythms

Edit: We decided to spread our musical taste a bit more wideley. Anything goes that has something to do with music from other cultures like African, Asian, Arabic, Folk, Traditional, Balkans, Gypsy etc. Be creative! If it is more unknown/obscure than better. E.g. something like Fusion of Jazz, Mestizo, Flamenco whatever. It is difficult to explain.

Ok, I thought to share some artists/music of Asia. So we can explore new things or just compare our tastes. This thread has its roots from the "What are you listening now?"

At Sfinks Mixed 2011 (festival in Belgium) I saw a performance of Les Etoiles du Ballet Royal du Cambodge. Dance and music, very beautiful!

Hmm hardly know what to suggest. "World Music" seems to emphasise African music, which I also love, but the far East gets left out. On a return visit to London I searched the CD shelves to find a single album from Indonesia!

How about the music of Laos and North-East Thailand? (The two are culturally close.) Try searching for Mor Lam or Molam, or other kinds of "lam" - Lam Lao, Lam Phutai, Lam Saravan... This is funky stuff with great vocals and one or two-chord backings. Lao "folk music" these days usually seems to be played with drums, electric guitars and keyboards, but still sounds Lao. There used to be a wonderful site called "Monsoon Country" full of great sounds but all I can find now is this: http://www.angelfire.com/folk/monsoon-country/ which has all its links broken. ^ Pretty interesting stuff. I love all kind of World music and here where I live it is correct, it is also mostly connected to African music and it is great but I prefer the Asian region more. Actually on the university where I work we have a focus on Africa. smile

When I turn the volume on here from my flat and there beats some Arabic music, I saw some surprised faces looking at me. smile

Genre: Hip-Hop, Rap, Jass-rap, techno

M-Flo is one of my top favorite Japanese bands that can easily get people in the mood for dancing, singing, and good times groovin'.  Still surprises me that it is only two people who end up working with other singers for some fantastic groovy songs.  I wished they made more studio albums (not remixes or "Best of") after their 2007 Cosmicolor album.  The remixes were good too.

As we have here some "Japanese" guys, one band I enjoy much is the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. So, as the name suggests it is Ska music with a touch of Jazz.

There is a Jazz band from Japan I am trying to find but I cannot remember its name. It sounds really old school but the music is exceptionell.

That's quite a different vibe I'm used to.  It's a nice tune to listen for casual chill talk. I'll need to listen more to them and see if I can grow to like their music.

Anyway, I'm going to highlight another of my favorite bands.

Artist: Bump of Chicken
Genre: Rock

I'd say this band has some diverse rock music.  Some of the songs you can really jam to while others are more suited for relaxing.  I began relistening to them and realized that they released some new songs within the last few years.  Man...their new stuff sounds even better!  Actually let me rephrase that.  More Bump of Chicken is fantastic! 

Time to rekindle my love for Asian music!

Another one of my favorites for a long while.  I would like to describe the music as very invigorating and relaxing.  A nice pick me up band to uplift moods or to reminisce about abstract feelings.  My favorite album is Hachimitsu.

Not going to post any links here except wikipedia - it's easy enough to search and find the incredible variety of sounds. Sukarno banned rock in the 60's and as a result electric music got ethnic. cool

These days there's a lot of pop and rock that doesn't sound much different from anywhere else, but I'll just mention a few of the types of music I've run into personally, and enjoyed:

Gamelan of course - slow stately Javanese and speedy hyper Balinese.

Dangdut - everybody's probably heard this reggaeish mix of Indian film music and local melodies. Elvy Sukaesih might be the most famous singer.

Pop Sunda - from West Java near Jakarta, romantic and melodic. The same pentatonic scale you'll find in the region's folk and classical music.

Qasidah - from Aceh: Arab melodies + Dangdut rhythms + Islamic message

Kroncong - Western influenced, from Java, with interlaced guitar lines that sound as if they were gamelan gongs + long romantic vocal lines,  violin, flute... very nice, sounds a bit like Hawaiian music sometimes.

Degung - again from West Java (I think) - flute with gamelan + (usually) what sounds like electric bass. Very spacy, long tunes.

Kecak - somewhat famous chorus from Bali imitating monkeys.

I once heard something from North Sulawesi with pop vocals over a bamboo gamelan accompaniment.

Cilokak music from Lombok. Beautiful.

("c" in Indonesian is pronounced like "ch")

It's a huge country and there's just so much incredible stuff...

At the moment I'm using this traditional Japanese song 'Azuma Jishi' as an alarm clock in the morning, much more soothing than a regular jarring alarm sound!

i saw him live on Lowlands festival (NL) and it was awesome. he ended with an attempt to play some christmas tune on his Casio, which stopped working. he then proceeded (Christmas-hat on) to dance around the stage like a crazy person while just humming the tune. pure genius this man.

Ayarkhaan (http://ayarkhaan.blogspot.com/) is a band from the Sakha Republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakha_Republic). Their music (traditional with jew's harp) is different maybe strange but very beautiful. There are some videos on their site.

(I had never heard of the Sakha republic until Ayarkhaan.)

Now I will make the change to India. A nice country but i have never been there. Maybe some time. smile I love their music and every region has to offer something different and in so many languages. I am not the biggest Bollywood watcher but I like their dancing and musical sequences in the movies.

Don't let's forget Bhangra - made in the UK! Its roots are in the Punjab in India though.
Go back in time in Bollywood and there was the wonderful singer Lata Mangeshkar.

I first heard of LM on the radio in Japan many years ago but didn't quite catch the name. Lata something...? Anyway, a few months later I was on holiday in Singapore and after lunch in the Indian district (great South Indian food) found a big Indian music shop, so dropped in to see what I could find. Racks and racks of cassettes by people I'd never heard of - no idea what to buy - so that singer popped into my mind and I asked the assistant if there was someone whose name began with "Lata". He looked a bit taken aback, but showed me to a huge section in the middle of the shop filled with Lata Mangeshkar tapes! Don't know how I managed to miss it...
