The new album of Anoushka Shankar is simply fantastic.

This mix with Flamenco and Indian music is so awesome, real good quality world music.
Edit: Oh, and another one, outstanding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqxkdVGNFoM.

Has anyone been to Istanbul - or lived there? The music scene looks pretty interesting.
^ Was not there yet but I am planning. And yes, the music scene is incredible.
Ivan, if you go be sure to tell us about it when you get back! ![]()
^ Of course!!
I don't know if this counts, because I'm not really a fan, but my wife had a connection to a band called X Japan which was popular in the mid-'90s -- she knew the lead singer Toshi somehow -- and while we lived in Japan we were invited to their New Year's Eve concerts in Tokyo. I was pretty lost being the sole gaijin among a throng of Japanese folks milling around backstage, but the music wasn't bad. I think one of the musicians in the band passed away in '98 and I haven't really followed them since I've been home (that was 2000).
Does this band ring a bell with anyone?
That's kewl larry. X japan was real successful. What city/prefecture did yall live in?
We lived in Saitama-ken, about 40 miles west of Tokyo. My wife is from Chiba. It was an interesting four years living there.
@larry
That's a big 10/4 buddy. Bet you got some good stories. Chiba ey? I went to Disneyland there, bout the extent of my Chiba experience. Did you ever visit the Hakone hotspring area? Love that region.
Ken Hirai, one of my favorite artist in Asian / Japanese music industry.
IMHO he has great talent in music.

rstrcogburn -- Yep, Hakone is great. I wish I could find some onsens here. I've only been to Chiba once while I was there. One of the best places I visited while I was there was Hakodate in Hokkaido -- it was a lot like San Francisco.
He is my fav.

I know they're old but recently I really like listening to Yellow Magic Orchestra, it's electronic music but the good kind, not the crappy kind full of auto-tune, sampling, etc, and all that crap.

(Sorry for the bump. but it seems all the good threads go to the bottom fast.)

^ No, no, it is good that you bumped it. I just had nothing special to post in a longer time.

Yellow Magic Orchestra
Wow, YMO, that's taking me back. I haven't listened to them since the 80's, though I do try to keep an eye out for whatever Ryuichi Sakamoto has his hands in at the moment (the guy is all over the map)...
Listening to some Wu Bai.

Yes YMO were pretty good. Their bass player Haruomi Hosono made a couple of nice laid-back albums too, quite different. Tropical Dandy and Haraiso still sound good.
Modern techno-pop from Perfume, so bad it's good.

Nice source of Thai music:
http://monrakplengthai.blogspot.com/
Not Asian, but we were talking about Moroccan Gnawa music a while back. Check this out:
http://moroccantapestash.blogspot.com/
And an amazing collection of African music:
http://likembe.blogspot.com/
Why does Blogspot have all this great music?
^ Wow for the Moroccan blog. I know there are some blogs with world music. I will post another here, not only Asian but a great source. Though not very active lately: http://babeblogue.blogspot.com/. It has links to all the goodness too.
And to post again some Asian stuff. Sara Alexander, I think she comes from Israel but the music has many influences, try it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_6iVsg4aaM. Ok, the quality of most of the videos here is not good.
That Sara Alexander song is very nice. I've not heard of her.
@Ivan, there's so much great African music trying to get in here... do you think the thread title could be changed to "Asian and African music", or maybe it would be better to start a new thread for African sounds?
^ I think we should rename it to world music.
As I love African, Arabic and Asian music etc.
So we can put everything that is not American/British Rock and Pop but sounds from other cultures like we already post here. What do you think? It is anyway what I listen most of the time.
Yeh that sounds alright. Personally, I don't really like the term "World Music" that much, but there doesn't seem to be any good alternative.
Or even "Sounds from other cultures"?
Except some of our friends here are from those "other" cultures!
Anyway, by all means, let's open it up to all that other fantastic music that doesn't get served up by the Money Machine. ![]()

Yeah, that is what I mean.
I do not know a better term as World Music, maybe International Music? Anyway that is not so important. Let me find a title. ![]()
