Topic: Open Office vs Libre Office

Hi All,

I recently switched to crunchbang from ubuntu.  I'm very happy with it for the most part. 2 things i dont like though are:
1. No Firefox
2. Open Office instead of Libre Office

I have fixed both, but i dont understand why in the open source world  the crunchbang guys are supporting google and oracle.

Just a thought

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

oh and isnt #!  a shebang

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

#! is based on Debian Squeeze. There is no Firefox or LibreOffice in Squeeze, so CrunchBang doesn't have them either.

You are of course free to install them if you like. Linux is all about freedom and choice. smile

(LibreOffice is in Squeeze Backports; don't hold your breath on Firefox, but Iceweasel is essentially the same thing.)

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

I know there was a thread about the reason for switching from iceweasel to chrome (performance?).

Wait...I thought open office was owned by Oracle and that libre office is "better".

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

Add Debian backports and you can get Libre Office, the change from Open Office was after the release of Debian Squeeze as stable.
I did yesterday and had no problem.
Or you could change to testing or unstable and have a rolling distro with new software.

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

Correct, the first LibreOffice release was just a few days before Debian Squeeze release, so there was not enough time to test it adequately for Squeeze (though it will probably be default for Wheezy, the next release).

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

Two posts and I already know that the two of us will have quite some fun here on the #! forums. Welcome.

I'm so meta, even this acronym

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

Personally I use LibreOffice because the development seems to be faster there. If you want just a word processing program and a spreadsheet one, use AbiWord and Gnumeric.

I have two questions for you:
1) are you aware CB includes, as its default web browser, Chromium which is the open-source project behind Google Chrome?
2) why should anybody be expected to support Google - a company who's relationship with government is dubious, and Oracle?

Re: Open Office vs Libre Office

Regarding software preferences and free software philosophy in general.  I think you'll find that crunchbangers are a diverse crowd with varying levels of interest or adherence to the "principles" of software freedom.

Some people care, some people don't but as a distro I don't think corenomial really discriminates when he makes the distro.  Besides, OpenOffice was dropped by Oracle anyway.
