Topic: Wireless network again... [Sorta solved]

Afternoon All,
I've just taken on a 'no-names' laptop onto which I've installed #! with LXDE.

There is a wireless on/off switch on the front of the laptop. Turning this on doesn't turn on the wireless network.

With the wireless switch in the On position, the NetworkManager applet tells me that the 'Wireless Networks' are disabled.

With the wireless switch in the off position the 'Wireless Networks' in NetworkManager disappears altogether.

Wired networks works.

How can I find out what the wireless network card is & how can I turn wireless on?

when my wifi-button stopped working i tried this app called 'rfkill'. apparently your card can be hardblocked or softblocked, which you can see and sometimes remedy with rfkill. just 'sudo apt-get install rfkill' to get it.

doesn't return anything.

rfkill list

returns the following:

1: phy1: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: yes

DAK whether I can hard unblock the Wireless LAN?

Seems like your wireless card is not detected.
Please post output of

lspci -knnvv

Hard block means it is blocked by hardware switch, or not enabled in BIOS. Check that first.

Regarding the BIOS, I can't find anything in there to switch on the wireless. I'm running PhoenixBios V4.0 R6.0.

If there is a wireless card in there, it is not detected by the OS.
Does the output of 

rfkill list

change when you toggle the wireless switch?
Perhaps another Fn combination switch is needed to switch wireless on? Or the switch broke?

I am searching on "Subsystem: CLEVO/KAPOK Computer Device [1558:0480]".

Seems that hardware is very recent. Perhaps it would be a good idea to try to boot from live CD or USB with a very recent OS, like Ubuntu 11.10 and see if your wireless card gets detected there.

if rfkill gives you output with the wifi-switch on, and nothing with the switch off, at least the system is detecting something here. from the dmesg output i got these 2 relevant lines:

ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

what this means or what to do i can't tell you (other than: use Google), but maybe i've saved someone looking through the dmesg..

Can you try this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get  install firmware-ralink 
sudo modprobe rt73usb

Then try to enable wlan0 via nm-applet

Hi Simon,

We are not going to make any progress until we can remove that hard lock on your wireless.
Can you post the output of

sudo cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistant-net.rules

Oh, and remove that wireless USB dongle before running that command.

As lspci does not detect the card, your problem is _not_ related to the OS but to either a BIOS problem (i.e. slot deactivated) or a hardware defect.

Okay. It's not fixed however I have got wireless working by turning the wireless switch on the front of the laptop off. Then using a wireless dongle. I did have to 

rfkill unblock all

but then it worked smile
So I've ordered a PCMCIA wireless card for the other laptop.

I'm having the same problem. Installed the latest 32 bit statler on my Dell Inspiron Mini 1018 and I, too, get the 'wireless is disbled by hardware system' message.

Can anyone explain how to solve this like I'm five?

sudo apt-get install rfkill
rfkill list

If there is a line    

Hard blocked: yes

in the output, then there is a switch euh.. blocking the wireless
Search the documentation that came with your computer for a key combination that locks/unlocks your wifi.

It is also possible to get

Soft blocked: yes

In that case check your BIOS for a setting to enable/disable wireless.

If there are no blocks, post output of

uname -r
lspci -knn

Post between [ code ] brackets please.
