Topic: Awesomewm vs Scrotwm?

Hello everyone!!

I'm thinking in start to use a tiling window manager, but I can't decide between scrotwm or awesome!
(I've seen many other options...but this 2 seem the most used, so, if people like it, I guess there's a reason big_smile)

So far, I've used awesome...and it seems "awesome", I haven't tried to try scrotwm... but I will, hell yeah! big_smile

What do you guys think? Which one is better for what?
What are the weak spots of them?

Not trying to start a flame war here, and I hope it will never happen... (In fact, seeing the great crunchbang community, I don't think that will ever happen) But who knows... ><

Re: Awesomewm vs Scrotwm?

Scrotwm is more spartan and minimal, but i  could never get it to really work at all so that ruled it out. For Awesome, i didn't feel like learning LUA to configure it properly so that ruled that one out. Awesome weakness and strength is LUA lol. Scrot is more just a work horse.

As far as "fun" tilers, WMFS is pretty good to me so thats what i use.

i3 has been my favourite so far, it uses dmenu though so when you enter the shortcut for menu you type in the application you want to launch as opposed to the usual right-click. That's better imo.

Just try both and decide for yourself.

Re: Awesomewm vs Scrotwm?

Trying out both is really the best advice.

Personally I've dug just about every other tiling WM more than Awesome. But that's only because of LUA, I prefer an easier config file. But I'm sure there's a lot of strengths in LUA, I"m just too lazy to learn it.

So because of that I prefer Scrotwm. Not only because of the ease of configuring though, it's also because of it's minimal look and feel. But admittedly I do miss having a status tray. So whenever I need one I use WMFS. To me that window manager is best of both worlds. Ease and simplicity of Scrotwm but has a native status tray.

I also like i3 very much. It comes pretty much with batteries installed. It's major flaw though (if you call it a flaw), is that it has no system tray by default. If you use applications like skype, you'll have to use some external tray, which can be a little annoying because it costs you some screen real estate.

This!!

They both have their advantages, disadvantages and quirks.
Awesome is arguably more full-featured, almost DE-like in what it offers. Scrot's more spartan, the bar and dmenu being the only added "luxuries".

Tiling WMs are sorta like helmets or driving shoes. Many well respected manufacturers out there, but at the end of the day you'll probably find that one make/model tends to fit you better then the rest.
