Topic: irc moderation

there's been a marked increase in unchecked effing and blinding in the irc.  not to mention other graphic references.  now while i'm often one for swearing like a trucker elsewhere, i'd always been told that #crunchbang was supposed to be family friendly.

there's no reason crunchbang cant be used by young children, and of course [i'm sure] most parents dont want their young children exposed to that kind of language or graphic references.

can we get the chat back on track?

need another op?

Re: irc moderation

Hmm, I need to check the irc again since it wasn't like that when I was on it a few weeks back.

Re: irc moderation

To be completely honest, i have a burning feeling he is talking about me.
I do tend to take the irc off-topic and use less than family friendly language sometimes.

I will refrain from this in the future.

A mod would be good though, i was actually quite surprised there wasn't one before.
Which is partly why I have been so relaxed about language, among other things.

Re: irc moderation

yeah, you obviously stood out.  but it was getting to be a street of broken windows.

we'll see how it goes. maybe i can invite my niece and nephew after all.  smile

To set this straight, the "mod team" consists of 5 people. Access list shows corenominal, ultraturquoise, Kharza, shazbotmcnasty, and dizzie. Ultraturquoise and shazbotmcnasty visit the channel occasionally, me (Khaza on that list) you can find by that nick, or by the other accounts I use: harski and this forum login name.

Re: irc moderation

funny thread to read. had no idea people were coming from this angle. mind you that i am not criticizing here at all, just had not thought about it before.

my own language can be quite coarse at times, and being from the Netherlands i am often very easily unaware of the implications of certain words for people from other native-speaking countries. i am fairly certain a word such as 'shit' has a heavier impact when read by a native-speaker than it does for one of my fellow countrymen. the same goes for lots of other strong words. i think i once read somewhere that the Netherlands are the only country in the world where people swear with diseases. this puts the amount of value we put on these words in perspective i suppose.we are clearly not a people afraid of using strong language.

i have a certain amount of intelligence in my head though, and try my best to keep some words down when speaking online. however, being used to a certain type of language you get somewhat dependent on this when it comes to self-expression. so i will sometimes choose to use a certain word, knowing its possible impact, because i feel i cannot say it in a different way without some of my meaning getting lost in translation, so to speak.

i can also imagine people speaking more 'loosely' on IRC than they do on the forums. on IRC, everything you type is gone after an [ENTER]. on the forums, you may re-read your own post before clicking 'Submit reply', leaving you with some more time to think.

i think the most important thing here is people recognizing their own behavior and being willing to seriously take different opinions on this subject into account. a prime example of this is the above post by Sav1or.

Re: irc moderation

I tried to skim my lastlog for offensive things being said this morning, but couldn't even find what Sav1or was referring to. Anyways, I hope you people who have issues with things regarding IRC would take it up on the IRC. I've come to the understanding that most of the frequent chatters, myself included, don't read this forum on a regular basis. I wouldn't even have noticed this thread if Sav1or himself hadn't linked it to #crunchbang.

Re: irc moderation

My experience of the irc channel has been quite pleasant apart from a few trolls moving in. I would agree on more operators as I would have kicked a fair few people for their behavior in our wonderful community channel. Perhaps a bot called Statler that warns and kicks? I am sure we could all put our skills together and write one.

I like this idea.

And like is said up top, things are very different on the forums. It seems like there is two groups, the irc guys and the forums guys (or gals). Of course, some people may not like to get on irc all the time, or even want to.

And like another post above, it is probably best to leave forum problems and the forums, and irc channels on irc. Since there seems to be "two groups" here, we don't need a clash of the titans.

I realize i don't have much say here, being new to the community, but I'm willing to help out where i can and minimize my questionable behavior, for the community.

Now yes, this is cliche' and kinda stupid, but this commercial sums some things up pretty well.

"Lose yourself in the community, for the best of the community."
