Topic: [SOLVED] Reporting Spam and Necro-Bumping

I don't want to get into the policies and politics of reporting spam and the who, what, why or wherefore of necro-bumping [read the date for goodness sakes before posting] but is there a way when someone chooses to report either of these and the post has been previously reported that a small pop-up window could notify us of that.  Such as

Thank you. This post has been previously reported. You will be returned to the Index in three...two...one...seconds

or something similar.  Another version is once a post or thread had been reported, the report button could or would be disabled.  I know the mods have to delete the spam -- whether our reports add to that workload or not...   neutral

EDIT -- marked as solved -- notice timestamp

Not too sure how easy this would be for Philip to implement.  Us Mods try and pick up the spammers as soon as they post a dodgy link and the Reports system is the users way of letting us know that someone has slipped through the net. Thanks for the suggestion though; I'll mention it to "him indoors"!

Re: [SOLVED] Reporting Spam and Necro-Bumping

I'd say this is worth a bug report here: http://punbb.informer.com/ (as a feature request of course). I have no idea how reports are handled in PunBB, most board softwares I know have a staff-only section where every report generates a thread. In my experience, a double report is less bad than undocumented mod reaction, e.g. a mod already killed the bot and did not leave a note for the others.

Now the philosophic debate begins: Do I want my hypothetical users to know, that a random post has been reported? Ethics! Yay lol

I like the idea.

I'm so meta, even this acronym

Re: [SOLVED] Reporting Spam and Necro-Bumping

^ To clarify: the report button would only be disabled for previously reported posts or threads only, not forum-wide.  That would be silly.  roll  This is a useful feature that needs to remain in effect.

Good point. If a post has been reported the button disappears.
Does it really matter that much if a post is reported more than once?

No johnraff, it doesn't.  That's the question I tried to address in my first post.  How much more work is entailed by the moderators deleting several posts or one thread.    I honestly don't know and don't know how to find the answer.  If it's a simple clickyty-click and everything is pristine once again, great.   big_smile

Awebb, I see what you're saying by having the report button turned off.  Um.  Yeah.  Not a good idea.  hmm

EDIT -- and thanks to johnraff for nudging my thinking apparatus -- must be off due to the moon.  Or solar flares.  tongue

Re: [SOLVED] Reporting Spam and Necro-Bumping

you could have it just report once and keep the button afterwards, including allowing people to report. Only the new reports go to /dev/null big_smile
