Topic: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

So some of you might remember my previous attempts at making an LCARs setup: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mark_mrwiz … 6458090578

I've come to consider the fact that, Openbox is almost certainly NOT the best distro to attempt a really good LCARS setup with.  In fact, the best would PROBABLY be a very minimal window-decoration-less WM.  Which brings my mind to all the various tiling managers.

I think the prerequisite features would be: pixel-based margins or definitions for preventing windows from showing up in the LCARS style curving decorative bits.  Ability to run tint2 would be nice as it makes for a pretty nice task bar in various configurations.

It's been a pet interest of mine for a long time, and I tend to keep an extra user-login "startrek" set up for working on it/  I'm not really sure the best way to go about it though, so I wanted to take opinions.

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

What if you setup Openbox's rc.xml to disable decorations on all windows?

BTW if you wish to contact me, send me an e-mail instead of a PM.

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

I wasn't aware you could do that... I'll have a look.  I am definitely more familiar with openbox than any other minimal WM, so it's always nice working with what you know.

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

I tracked down some fonts that might help you out LCARS Fonts

in fact this whole site will help you it has hex colours http://www.lcarscom.net/faq.htm

[rant]
that website... that guy...
he made a LCARS-site and has a thank-you-list on it that makes it seem like he wrote a book on neurosurgery or something.

Mike and Rick: friends who have offered suggestions, been a sounding board,
    and who just told me "no, that looks crappy, do this instead."

a 'sounding board', for a Star Trek website, seriously?
[/rant]

cool idea orion, curious to see how you tackle this and what the outcome looks like.

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

+1 on the rant!  I especially love how he copied the LCARS look for his website, yet he wants to know about other sites that look like they may have copied the look of his copy so he can send them cease-and-desist threats.  It's like, "Dude, unless you're Rick Berman or whoever the guy was on his team that originally conceived the idea, you ain't got no ownership of that design."  Grrrrr...

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

I would definitely use this theme.

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

@pvsage: ah, glad someone else noticed that. i wasn't even going to start about that part because i felt it would be too 'ranty' smile

now let's get back on topic and wish orionthehunter lots of luck with the design, and please keep us posted on the progress through screenshots etc! we'll help you through rough times and be your sounding board smile

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

Also if you ever want to add animations and such, you may want to look into using compiz standalone. In my experience it's even more flexible than openbox, just perhaps not as lightweight.

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

@rhowaldt I don't know the guy that owns that site and I am not really bothered I just thought I would post it as it is topic related and can be of help to someone who is designing an LCARS style interface.

oh sorry did not mean to imply that man. i was aware of your intentions, and you are completely right in posting it. especially the hex color list is very useful indeed. i was just being off-topic because i cannot keep my mouth shut sometimes smile

Put this inside of <applications></applications> in your ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml.

<!-- match all windows, and remove their decorations -->
    <application class="*">
      <decor>no</decor>
    </application>

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

Cool, I want to get back to this, but I've been distracted by getting #! on my Mac Mini and the many problems that have ensued with that.  Thanks for the links, tips, and interest, it's a big motivator :-D

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

Wow... putting those fonts as the default GTK font at about size 16, and using the GTK LCARS theme from gnome-look, plus a convincing wallpaper and no window decorations takes you pretttty far.  From here it's setting up tint2, getting a solid icon theme, determining good applications for the environment and a lot of tweaking.  Screenshots to come soon.

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

looking pretty good I think.  Undecorated windows with margins set abnormally high and a right click on the tint2 task to close something.  The font and GTK theme take it pretty far alone.

Dude, totally. I'm with you, I'll post something tonight in the screenshot thread and link it here. Check this site out, it's unbelievable...

Re: LCARs (Star Trek console program)

I was thinking a LCARS custom google search page or something would be kewl for a browser being how that's kind of what LCARS is about, a gateway to all information.  Just an idea.
