Topic: Where is my love button? - (A suggestion for the forum format)

Um, I think I had better explain.

When I am not tying knots inside computers, I knit. A lot. I use the Ravelry forum a lot to link with other yarn geeks.

At the bottom of each post in a thread in the Rav forums ther are 6 buttons, rather like the Report and Quote ones at the bottom of the posts here in #! land.

Rav's buttons are: Educational Interesting Funny  Agree Disagree  Love. It turns out to be a very handy way of responding quickly to a post when you don't have time to write anything. For example, I've seen lots of posts that have made me chortle here, I'd love to be able to acknowledge it, but don't want to break the flow of the thread by doing 6 or 7 posts in a row saying 'lol to that one 2 pages back'... and of course, I keep searching for my love button when I see something particularly awesome.

Um...

Double entendre aside, the Rav community is a particularly vibrant and caring one, and an active forum helps make a happy community around a distro. I was just wondering if there were any way to share the love button love here in #! ville.

I appreciate that this is probably very low on people's priorities. So I'm not expecting anything, but I thought I'd just put it out there to see what people think.

Here's a sample post from the objects of shame thread:-

I love knots! and pigs that fly!

Welcome to the forum. But I must disagree. I think the screenshot threads are pretty successful perhaps precisely because of the crosstalk. And for whatever number of reasons you don't see the insipid +1 and "This" that you see elswhere, and that confess I am guilty of from time to time. Hell, I like reddit and its system. But we got some good talk going on here that might dissipate if a reputation system is implemented.

Thanks Replicant, I think I'll have to go and have a look at these threads. I'm still pretty new here and finding my way around smile

What's wrong with writing a few words? I find those kinds of statistics cold and sterile, people don't really think before they press those buttons. It is also questionable, if something is actually good or bad, just because the majority says so (Windows, Facebook, the Bush administration).

I'm so meta, even this acronym

the other forum i use is the Renoise (music-software) forum. it has a lot of features this forum hasn't. however, it is very rare to see someone make a post with just '+1' or something over here, while over there you see that stuff way more often. i don't really like that. i feel that if you truly like/love something, you can take the time to at least write something. and be honest: how much time does it really take to write 'i love it!' ? imo, that is enough. i love these forums for their eloquence and the time people take for each other. it feels like a bunch of friends when everyone commenting says something useful or at least takes the time to write something.

i fear a 'love'-button or such would become the equivalent of a Facebook 'like' button. and with that button, i always think, 'who cares that you like it? what do you like about it? why do you like it? say something meaningful, or shut up'.

(mind you, this is not directed at you at all Happibun. you are doing a good thing making a suggestion and helping to build the community. this is simply my opinion. the 'shut up' etc are not meant for you but is old FB frustration speaking smile)

Yes, the "Love button" is labelled "Submit" here smile

Submit to Love?
