Topic: Wallpaper experimentation

I mentioned I'd been toying with making my own wallpapers in the screenshot thread - figured I'd might as well post them here!

The general style of them came to be after I was playing around with SymbOS - I figured I'd might as well see how well it applied to other things. I think it's a nice effect, personally.

(1680x1050 and 1024x600 use smaller "pixels" - this is due to either strange vertical resolutions or the base image otherwise just being too small. I'm debating using higher resolutions anyway, however...)

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

Nice, very colorful. Thanks for sharing. smile

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

Different and ...eerie, `n` quite cool.

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

The more I look at them the eerier they get, not the soothing #! feeling, if you know what I mean. Should fit the "BlairSwitch Linux Project"  though.

Classic.... lol

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

@Bloodstar: Have finally tried them out, and works great, in fact they fit the OB minimalistic approach very well if you want to get some colour into your life. Yes they are still wonderfully eerie.

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

I am oddly reminded of the good ol' pre-2K times when technology wasn't so huge as it is now. smile

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

Glad to hear everyone likes them! They do give off a bit of an eerie vibe under the right conditions, especially the Halloween ones... it's not exactly what I was shooting for initially (save the halloween ones, of course), but I do like the effect.

I'd try to get some good Christmas themed wallpapers, but it seems as if my iPod's camera does not like taking pictures of lights in the dark. Yikes. (Granted, I haven't tried a still position, but judging by some of the other photos I've taken it wouldn't look very nice.) Not to mention it'd be a bit hard conveying it in four colors, and sixteen just seems to be a bit much.

However, I was playing with another photo I'd taken a while back of the Raven Motel in Media, and much to my surprise it worked REALLY well.

I'm linking to the wallpaper's folder from now on - it's easier on me to add in resolutions should I realize I missed one, or should someone ask for one.

e: oops, somehow broke the DA link

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

Really cool stuff Bloodstar, the Raven Motel should fit #!/OB perfectly.

I made this 4 years ago.

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

That's an interesting wall, too - I might use it sometime if I need a 4:3 wall.

I've got three more wallpapers ready... one was made in December, one was made earlier this month, and with how hectic and busy I've been, I kinda forgot to post the previous ones here.

This one was of the Springfield Hospital in Springfield, PA. Unfortunately, due to the events that have brought me there (Grandmother hospitalized (and as of the 17th, she passed away after being rehospitalized for ten days... though she was doing fine until the 14th and looked to be making a recovery), there's little to no chance that anything at all will happen this year, nor will I get some shots from NJ like I'd hoped. Oh well.

This one was taken at a cemetery where an uncle of mine was buried recently. I figured it'd make a nice shot as we drove on the road... and considering the subject matter, grays seemed appropriate.

This was taken at MacDade Mall in Ridley Township.

And no, I never did get those aforementioned shots from NJ.

e: I missed a wallpaper. Oops.

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

You Bloodstar are a genious for creating the eeriest, weirdest, off the wall wallpapers I have ever seen. Beautiful work! Sorry to hear about your Grandmother though, but that hospital shot is the freakiest of them all!

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

...Haha, thanks! Glad to see some appreciation, and thanks for the sentiment. I didn't quite INTEND that hospital shot to be as eerie as it is... but you know, it really, really fits.

I've come with a new wallpaper, too: a non-monochromatic (although the monochromatic option is still available, I'll explain) wallpaper! This one was taken just inside Delaware.

Unfortunately, due to the dithering not quite wanting to cooperate when trying to do lower resolutions (too much detail loss in the lower part of the image), I've only got this one available in 1680x1050, 1920x1080, and 1920x1200.

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

Hi it is me again Bloodstar, the bloodfan of your wallpapers, just wanted to comment your latest effort. The blue sky is very blue and beutiful, and it does not do it for me, sorry. But keep `em coming, please!

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

... Yikes. February 8th was my last wallpaper post? Let's fix that.

Too much has been happening, that's all I'll say. However, I'm back with a new camera to take pictures with and a huge range of new resolutions!

This one is a less creepy red wall! I figured I'd go for a red shot again, considering the last one I took was ... overly creepy, in a way. Perhaps the events over the past four months for me have tainted the wallpaper in my mind! Ah well, I don't regret making that one! This was actually going to be me experimenting and making something with 16 colors, and it actually looked INCREDIBLE (Nice muted colors without losing TOO much!) ... but I happened to catch actual people in the shot, and due to my paranoia I'm making the wall four colors to make their faces mostly unrecognizable just in case.

Go figure, eh?

This wallpaper was taken on the Media campus of Delaware County Community College in Pennsylvania - through a window in the building with the cafeteria, bookstore, library, etc... not the academic building, I guess, but I don't know the proper term for it. This is actually my second attempt at such a shot. ( You can see the first here here). It wasn't really an attempt at a wallpaper but more a "hey, something odd's happening, snap a shot of it" type thing, but I found it worth attempting to turn into a wallpaper in December. It didn't pan out, sadly - I found it a bit too dark around the top, and ultimately a little too "weird" for what I was aiming for. I may try to make it into a wall in the future, though... it won't be available in resolutions above 1920x1200, though, being taken on my iPod!) I find this one captured what I was aiming for a lot better than the first one... especially considering the second one was taken on a whim!

Re: Wallpaper experimentation

Nice shot Bloodstar. But the real gem is the first try in your link, incredible, really weird stuff, gives me vertigo. Great shot!

Thanks - I may actually finish out the wallpaper from the first attempt. It's grown on me since digging it back up. Can't figure out why I didn't like it initially... The only thing that bothers me now is that I'll have to drop a couple resolutions from my support list for it because of the original image's lower resolution than what I've been using. Could be worse, I guess... (Well, that, or I can just use the 4x4 pixels from the days of old again for some of those...)

I've actually finished another one (record low time between two walls? only if you discount the Halloween 3-pack I made) today - this one's unique in two ways in that not only does it contain more total colors than my other wallpapers, but I also made it out of a stock photograph. I really loved the original, and couldn't resist with the fact that they actually allowed it to be used as stock! I'll toss in a link to the original photo with the usual links.
