Topic: Alan menu updater

Anyone tried this Alan thing? https://launchpad.net/alan

I saw it in the the description of another openbox distro that just got added to Distrowatch's listings called Semplice. http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=semplice

Curious, might give it a whirl.  Sounds like it's just some python magic.

Re: Alan menu updater

I definitely want Alan... it's my one complaint about OpenBox (sure, some people may like that they have total control of obmenu, but I'd kinda like it to auto update). Will be giving it a whirl soon.

Has anyone tried this out?

Re: Alan menu updater

I havent.  Was planning to, but they didnt provide an easy download.

Re: Alan menu updater

Maybe you can try this as well - http://code.google.com/p/mimarchlinux/downloads/list

Another openbox dynamic menu generation, works fine under Debian last time when i tried.

Re: Alan menu updater

I never use my OBmenu. hmm

Re: Alan menu updater

Couldn't find a download of any sort for Alan, just like orion couldn't, so I started looking at alternates.

I installed and setup openbox-menu, but it gave me a "Menu not found. Please specify a menu specification file." every time I tried to open up that entry. Google couldn't find any fixes for me so I moved on.

Thought I'd give the Debian menu a try since that's almost setup already, just needs to be uncommented and a line added to menu.xml where I want the menu to appear. Well, that didn't work for me either... I just got an empty/blank menu for it. (See my post here.

Thoughts? Any other auto updating menus that I can try?

Thanks!

Re: Alan menu updater

I have not looked for it lately but alan was in the Semplice repository.

Get Dropbox and an extra 250 mb http://db.tt/wAizqw0

Re: Alan menu updater

I've got space on my netbook's drive and a partition already set up, I'll install semplice sometime in the next couple of days and see if I can't do something like apt-get source alan or something like that. hmm Or at least apt-get install -d to get the package, I guess.

I use marchobmenu:

https://github.com/ju1ius/marchobmenu

I'm not sure which version I use, I remember having problems with the latest.

Edit: I use version 2.2 as I couldn't get 3.x to work.

Nice find. I'm working on trying to get it running now, but it has a dependency on python-t9n... which I can't find in our repos or on Google.

I'll try 2.2. I couldn't get Marchobmenu to work last time I tried it, I guess I was using 3.x as well.
