Agreed, Neuromancer is a must read. Also sort of related, albeit loosely, check out Cyberpunks by Hieroglyphics -- it is a great tune. smile

Re: cyberpunk

Cyberpunk. Hands down my favourite Sci-fi sub-genre, and mostly the only thing I read. William Gibson has been mentioned already, but my personal favourite is Neal Stephenson. I absolutely love "The Diamond Age". Another really cool author is Charles Stross, and especially "Accelerando" is a wild ride! I have read a lot of cyberpunk novels and always look for more, but the two mentioned above, along with "Neuromancer"  are really those that stick out for me, reading them again and again.

I can't help you with with specific resources (except http://project.cyberpunk.ru already mentioned), but I definitely recommend you to read some cool novels out there smile

Enjoy, and good luck with your project!

If it is any consolation, I will freely admit to struggling with Neuromancer the first time I read it -- in my humble opinion it is not the easiest book to follow and I had to read it twice before I had any type of clue. big_smile

Re: cyberpunk

Time to chime in on a few points.  When reading the 80's cyberpunk novels keep in mind:

William Gibson is basically the 'Grandfather' of the genre.  Writers that followed after him had the advantage of reading Gibson's works and honing their story-telling skills.  There was no "web" or real "internet" at the time Gibson spun these tales.  Neuromancer, and most of Gibson's early cyberpunk stories, were a hard read.

A book of short stories, titled Burning Chrome (this may be a US release name only, not sure), might be an easier step into the older writings.

I view KDE like I view snow. It looks fun and marvelous, it's fun to play in, but after a while I just want someone to take it all away.

Re: cyberpunk

I second the reading of Burning Chrome (that's what it's called in the UK too)

Re: cyberpunk

John Shirley's "City Come A-Walkin'" is sort of the grandfather of the grandfather -- William Gibson acknowledged a lot of debt to that book. And Shirley is just a terrific writer. The Amazon link to the book :

There's a great anthology called Mirrorshades, full of cyberpunk short stories, that's full of fun stuff :

I would still call them contemporaries along with Bruce Sterling and Rudy Rucker and then Neal Stephenson as their little brother. I would say Philip K. Dick would be the grandfather who wrote cyberpunk before it was even called cyberpunk. And, don't forget J. G. Ballard either.

Re: cyberpunk

Ahhh yes, Dick is the grand-master of all unusual sci-fi writing.

Re: cyberpunk

Just reading through the comments, and thinking to myself, "don't I have that somewhere? Maybe I should try reading it again." I did find myself becoming 'allergic' to consumer-branding when I read Pattern Recognition last time, just like the lead character... Really bad if you have Apple-centric friends.

Does anyone have any recommendations about Steam-Punk? The only things I've seen have been anime and manga, which are nice enough, but not really sink-your-teeth-into-it reading.

Yes. Actually two of them.

1. Get a PS3 and play Resonance of Fate.
2. Necroposting a cyberpunk thread and asking for steam punk might bring you interesting results. I'll do this from now on. Everywhere.

I'm so meta, even this acronym

+1 to Stephenson. Also, he is a Linux person :-D

I willfully participate in a campaign of misinformation!
