Re: humble suggestion: bring back February release as default download

I think i will stay on XFCE for now. It would still be good to have a short guide somewhere on how to install XFCE to current image. After all some people like a bit more featured desktop. Too bad it is dropped from developement in #!.

Re: humble suggestion: bring back February release as default download

^ Xfce is an apt get away, nothing difficult.

Re: humble suggestion: bring back February release as default download

Another +1 for stability here. It's great that Phillip is pressing on so that Waldorf will be wonderful, but now I've got the perfect OS in #! Statler Feb., I'm just ready to take a break from fixing & tweaking, lay back and enjoy things...

...maybe do a bit more web dev stuff after skyving off the last few years with Linux discoveries. smile

A really short guide to getting Debian Xfce on your computer

Download the Debian netinst  http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst
Burn to disk.
If install fails pick last menu option then <click> Enter
Follow instructions until tasksel then choose common system utilities or words to that effect for a minimal install, otherwise choose notebook or desktop according to your need
When system reboots do [as superuser] in terminal

apt-get update
apt-get install iceweasel gdm xfce4 xfce4-terminal dmz-cursor-theme network-manager-gnome

NOTES
The options in apt-get install are my personal preferences, pick and choose your own, but if you overdo it here you'll loose your minimalism.
Once installed, up and running, you can add other apps, like synaptic, if you use it.  If you add it in the initial apt-get install it will drag in a mess of GNOME dependencies but for some reason adding it later doesn't do this.  As much.  wink
If you want to add anything from the #! repos now's the time to do it  deb http://packages.crunchbanglinux.org/statler statler main

I guess that's it.

EDIT -- I'll probably forget I wrote this so don't expect me to be available to answer questions about it.  Don't worry -- your memory will start to fade soon enough.  smile

My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.

So that's where it went. I didn't accidentally screw up my partitioning at all roll

less is more. less is more more than more is so if you want more more, use less.

Re: humble suggestion: bring back February release as default download

I think that if GDM (or a display manager functionally similar to GDM) were put back in Statler in place of SLiM, I could consider this whole thread moot.

...and who would have thought being slim was a bad thing? lol

...It's just that if #! is based on Debian Stable (+backports), I think the "official" release of #! should be as bulletproof as Debian Stable itself, if not more so.  Isn't it reasonable to keep the more stable release as the default until the various hardware issues are worked out?  I just think doing this is more fair to the CrunchBang "branding" than removing any link to the older torrents from the download page.

Although I realise that #! is corenominal's personal project and, as such, he can distribute whichever versions of #! he wishes to, I have to agree that I would much prefer a stable version to remain available for download.

Personally, I am quite happy with the February squeeze-based version and, if I do upgrade, I will disable backports first as stability is a major requirement.

My only concern with ^ is that you may run into dependency hell when you dist-upgrade.

I quite agree - which is why I am very reluctant to "upgrade" to the new version. sad

I will have to look into apt pinning etc to try to find the best way to upgrade reliably.  However,  I would have been far happier if a stable version of CrunchBang was still available, rather than this peculiar mix of stable and backports.

If this is really the root of all the significant issues that folks have had, then I agree (and I'd much rather do that than go back to the previous release as a default, personally).

Meanwhile, a sticky forum thread with simple instructions for replacing SLiM with GDM would probably be valuable. LightDM is OK, but requires some changes to the session scripts and doesn't seem to play well with network manager. I haven't tried lxdm yet, but I think that I will before I install GDM.

Re: humble suggestion: bring back February release as default download

Too many bugs with slim, backports, broadcom, etc. The best solution is to ret-con 20111125 as "beta" and work up a new Release Candidate based on the community input (in my opinion).

I used to think Americans didn't understand the word "moot" till I was finally driven to look it up today. OK in the States it does mean "irrelevant" but in Britain it means "debateable", "up for discussion". smile

...meanwhile I've no intention of leaving the stable #! version that went out last January. In fact, for me, Corenominal could just retire now.
Job Done.  Great job!!  cool

(Maybe work up something new in a couple of years when Wheezy starts to head towards stability...)

Well John, it seems moot == academic. so I guess either term can mean several different things, depending on context.  I think Yanks in general tend to be pessimistic, so meanings like "irrelevant" or "no longer an issue" tend to be favored here.

I think we Americans use the legal term "moot" because we tend to sue everyone.

Re: humble suggestion: bring back February release as default download

1) The CrunchBang Xfce set-up is the best I have found

2) SLiM has been abandoned by the maintainer  who is the same for upstream and Debian

3) lxdm has never been built for Debian (seems that they try once, it does not work and they give up for a year or two)

4) LightDM works fine with wicd and I did not need to make any changes to session scripts

5) GDM legacy is going away in Wheezy only GDM3 will be in Debian then
