Topic: Looking for some support!

Hi guys!

I'm currently in the process of developing a brand new Linux Info, Tips, Tricks and Community site! We're going to be helping make Linux a real alternative, and showing people how easy it is to switch.

CrunchBang Linux is a main Distribution that we're going to be featuring on the main page...

We're looking to become friends of CrunchBang and it's Community, and not competition, as we'll be completely non-commercial, so we're looking for people who are interested in contributing to topics and to the main sections of the Distribution, sharing there knowledge and helping promote Linux!

We're looking for people who would be interested in improving, developing and contributing towards the CrunchBang page, helping change it, re-word it, create tutorials, videos and how-to's.

If you're interested in helping out head over to http://choose-linux.com and enter your email, then we'll get back to you when we're ready to launch! You can also PM me or reply on the thread too!

Thanks for your time guys.

Re: Looking for some support!

i might be interested, but i am not the type of person to really commit myself to something. i write how-to's etc whenever i figure something out, and i believe i can write them pretty noob-friendly as i know what people learning this stuff are going through. i hate stuff like 'then you edit the config file and...' - without actually telling people where that config file is located.

i can just check out what stuff you have on there that needs improving and see what i can do?

Yeah that would be awesome! It's nothing to commit to, we just need some nice friendly faces who can help out here and there and contribute within the community!

If you PM me your Twitter/Email I'll add you to my mailing list and I'll email you once I've added the finishing touches.

You might wanna add us to your bookmarks too: http://www.choose-linux.com

Re: Looking for some support!

Please stop calling Linux an OS. Say "Linux based operating system" instead. Thank you. wink
Nice idea anyways. big_smile

#! Chrome Extension
Uh... I'm supposed to share my deep insights here, right?

Re: Looking for some support!

I am interested and will offer what I can when ready

Re: Looking for some support!

English is not my first language, but may I suggest you take a look at the spelling and such? Even on the link you just provided, I noticed some mistakes that I think you don't have to make - it's not that complicated.

Another example, which is really really minor, is saying we're instead of we are. On a professional page, I think the second looks better.

Now I might just be nit-picking (correct word? big_smile) but if you want people to take you seriously, things like these are really important!

Let's do it and don't screw it.

Defiantly, I'm going to take a look at that right now, I appreciate all input given!

Re: Looking for some support!

I am interested. I am fairly young but don't let that fool you. I am fine at website scripting. Notice I said fine not great.
I have been using crunchbang for like a year now and really like it and considering you are focusing on Crunchbang I don't mind if you have a mini distro review section which I am happy to write for. Don't forget to mention that Crunchbang is extremely fast and can run fairly on 180MB ram and Intel Celeron processor (my old computer). The only other alternative I have used to crunchbang is Puppy Linux and with much respect although it is capable of loading its self in the computers ram and running of it. Its just not on the same level as Crunchbang and can not provide the sort of packages. Also since you are targeting windows users you might want to emphasise on them using XFCE since I am pretty sure a new dude would be freaked out by open box and it will take him a year and a half to get use to just changing his background. So XFCE. Also talk about how some softwares can run  via WINE so windows migrants don't feel uncomfortable. Thanks. I only just realise the way I have wrote this sounds like a negative demand but please understand it was not intended to be since I am rushing to get my work done.

Re: Looking for some support!

I see you are using 000webhost to host your website. If you ever need space to upload any downloads than I am willing to upload it for you on my server. smile Nice and Processional site by the way.

Awesome, we're using that temporarily until the site is ready to go live! No point wasting money on hosting bills for a splash page when we're not live! tongue

I've received your email, I'll be sure to contact you early next week on the launch status, you'll then be able to create a community account!

Re: Looking for some support!

Sorry for the double post, but this is currently what the CrunchBang page is looking like, please keep in mind that I only started development on this part about an hour ago, so what you see here will probably have a 90% change before final.

Any criticism, comments or suggestions on the progress so far?

Re: Looking for some support!

It looks very good but you have to stay current with the #! development and latest news. #! is now only using Openbox and Chromium e.g. is no longer the default web browser etc.

And I say the same like @Unia, use "It is..." instead of "It's..." on a professional site.

Yes I totally agree, that's why I'm looking to build a great community so these issues can be corrected as soon as they occur, and the site can a reliable source of up-to date information!

Re: Looking for some support!

Would you mind explaining your project, your goals, etc. a little bit deeper? I'm not quite sure at the moment, what exactly you're going to do - are you going to launch as a webpage filled with informations about Linux, tutorials, happenings in the world of Linux / Open Source? Are you going to be a community, a messageboard such as the one I'm posting this entry in (*grin*)? Are you going to be a mixture of all the things I mentioned above?

Generally speaking, I might be interested but I'm not quite sure if I'm capable of contributing usefull stuff. wink

Sorry for being abit vague in my original post, basically we're going to be a mixture of the above.

We're going to have sections of the site that give people the inside knowledge on each Operating System and Open Source Software. And then sections where community members can contribute, build there own guides, tutorials and tips.

Each section will be aimed at tackling all the well known problems/questions/information to each distro, and community members will be able to improve, add and change each article to make them better.

We will also begin to build an extensive community contributed database on all tried hardware configurations for distributions so people can search there exact specs to find out if that distribution is compatible easily, this may not be in the initial release, although we will be looking to deploy it in the future.

As well as a community message board and community blogs.

Anybody can contribute, whether they are going to be dedicated or not! smile

Thanks for your interest.

Re: Looking for some support!

Wow, you surely got ambition! There have been projects like this before that never really pulled of, so let's hope you can gather enough people to finally do this.

OTOH, you simply cannot provide every piece of information / include every single piece of hardware , just because there's so many available. Conclusion? Don't get too ambitious! Perhaps it would be better to list those hardware parts that do not work, such as Broadcom chips and so on.

Let's do it and don't screw it.
