screen resolution(s), desktop background preferences fail to save

When at work, I connect my laptop via DVI to a 24" Dell display. Each time I am forced to set the display preferences from scratch. Can someone point me in the right direction to configure the external display settings to be 'remembered' so I need not go through this tedium?
