Topic: Claws Mail is sweet :)

One of the first things I did when setting up my system was to remove claws and replace it with evolution. Then I kept reading posts about how good claws is so I decided to have a better look. The more I use it and explore its features the more I'm realising what a wonderful piece of software it is. Super fast, excellent filtering/search capabilities and plugins galore to name just a few. I highly recommend to any evolution devotees out there to really give this client some serious consideration or at the very least don't remove it without looking at it like I did to begin with smile

I did remove Claws, but I reinstalled it yesterday because I also have read how good it's.  I have to test it more today smile

I can confirm that Claws Mail is good! I've used it for a couple of years with several e-mail accounts, RSS-feeds etc. It's fast, easy to use and good looking.

^It's actually the aesthetic reasons why I have been hesitating to use it. (I'm a girl and I like pretty things wink )

Just wondering, have you checked this out yet?

With respect to an email client, I guess it all depends on a persons needs.  I personally use gmail 'client' a lot. wink

I am a Claws Mail user and I really rate it. As an email client it is hard to beat. I have to admit though, the application looks very unremarkable and could quite easily be overlooked. It is good to read that you have given it a second chance and are exploring its many features. smile

I hadn't heard of Claws Mail before #! but after using it for a while, I've really come to like it.

Does that mean we can count you as an official Claws Mail convert?! big_smile

#! is where I also heard of Claws. When I went with my Arch Linux experiment with Openbox, Claws was the first app that I installed. I really like it and now that I am back on #!, I will be using the heck out of it.

As do I, but I do have a work email that manages large volumes of messages. For this claws is proving ideal smile

So do you guys think its better than Thunderbird? Also can you minimize Claws to the tray?

I prefer it over Thunderbird, it is much lighter and it has just as many, if not more features. It also feels more like a native Linux application. Regarding minimising to the tray, it can both minimise and close to the tray by using the tray plugin. smile

I guess I'd prefer anything over thunderbird but this sums things up nicely.

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

I need help!

How can I set plugins which shows HTML mails to work. In #! 9.04.01 with Claws mail comes gtkhtml pluging, but when I try to download it, I've got error message:

The following error occurred while loading gtkhtml2_viewer.so :

/usr/lib/claws-mail/plugins/gtkhtml2_viewer.so: undefined symbol:
menu_create_items

I've looked over forums and google, even at Claws mail web page, but haven't found clearly steps how to set up plugins. Do I need to compile something ?

Thank you!

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

I like to use HTML in my outgoing messages. They're heavily formatted with colors and embedded images and backgrounds and that kinda stuff. Claws mail doesn't let me do any of that... and I couldn't find anything in the FAQ or User Manual to tell me about using the "external editor." But I gather from the site that Claws Mail isn't intended for the fancy, highly formatted stuff I like to compose. Thunderbird lets me do all that, so for now it's T-bird for me.

I had the same problem. I installed Dillo HTML viewer instead, which works fine.

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

Grhmnst,

thank you for suggestion. If I use Dillo, then I may use opera e-mail client as well.
I was trying to find lighter plugins.

Thank you, anyway.

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

Can someone explain to me why mail clients are still around if webmail is now the standard?

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

Mail clients are an easy way to consolidate multiple address (I know its possible to make webmail do the same!)

Also having a client makes it easy to backup/store emails offline.

I personally use webmail so perhaps someone else can give more reasons.

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

Isnt backing up your emails offline defeating the purpose of backing them up?
if something happens to your computer, you want them online with a provider that has backups of backups of their backups.
and as for consolodating addresses:
[censored content] (my provider)
will collect email from ANY other provider, regardless of how they work.
I dont know how they do it. I only know they dont use pop3 to do it because I used to have an AOL account that required money to use pop3- and i never purchased that feature. Yet [censored content] was able to get my emails just fine

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

Well if the emails are on your computer, then you can read them if your email provider ever has problems.

Also some people prefer the security of storing emails on their own computer.

Re: Claws Mail is sweet :)

Rigosantana3,

Try this.
[1.] Open gmail in your browser and do something else and look at speed
[2.] Try open mail client and do something else. (and feel the speed)

From my experience, gmail in browser eats CPU and RAM (maybe my view is subjective ?!)
In other hand, if yours mails are heavy (2> MB) then mail client isn't best solution (IMO). Btw, I leave e-mail messages on webmail server as well as on my comp with mail client.

So, basicaly, I'm always looking for speed and optimization.

Regards!
