No way you'll detect a major difference between JWM and Openbox on modern hardware. Maybe on a very old computer where every mb counts.
true, but as i stated in my intro, i also run a few old systems over here.
one is a Pentium II MMX system running @ 400 MHz with 512 MB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 4200 Ti (64 MB).
believe me, there IS a significant difference between OPENBOX and JWM on that one ! ![]()
so let me know what you think about it !
I can't tell if you mean "tell me what you think about installing jwm and running it instead of openbox"
or
"tell me what you think about the idea of replacing openbox with jwm as the default wm".
My 2c on the 1st question = I think people should install+run whatever wm/de makes them happy. I don't particularly like JWM. I've run a few distros that shipped with JWM as the default and I installed something else (generally openbox) within a week or so. Never could get used to it.
My 2c on the 1st question = Openbox is light enough for most purposes but I'd guess it has a larger userbase than JWM. I believe making JWM the default would limit crunchbang's appeal.
There is a saying sometimes attributed to Samuel Clemens: "make it as simple as possible, but no simpler." JWM (and ROX, wbar, and single-button mice) reminds me of something that is so stripped/precious that it's no longer useful to me. Your mileage may vary, of course.
fratemus,
you got me wrong. the intention is not to replace openbox in general.
the intention is to provide an alternative WM for those like me who still use (very) old computers.
JWM is not openbox, neither does it aim to imitate it. but it is lean and simple.
just because JWM doesn't suit your personal taste doesn't mean it's bad.

Agreed on all points; I made similar ones above. I was asking about the meaning of the original post, rather than making a value judgement on JWM. I may not have expressed myself very well. Es tut mir leid.
I certainly understand about old machines. All my machines are used, I've never bought one new. I had an old P2-200mHz that ran from 1997 until about two years ago. It ran my webserver and a few other things. Didn't run X on it at all, just CLI. I installed Tiny Core on a 300mHz laptop last year. I think it ran flwm. Since the Tiny Core .iso is about 11MB and boots to a usable X session, perhaps flwm is worth a look.
Another candidate would be DWM or one of the mouseless WMs like ratpoison. TinyWM claims to be written in 50 lines of c sourcecode.

fratermus,
no need to apologize here buddy, as it never felt like an offense. ![]()
the meaning of my original post was to collect opinions and suggestions regarding the use of JWM in combination with #! .
hints to alternatives are always welcome. i've tried out DWM too, but for a tiling WM i'd probably prefer i3-wm.
tinywm is an impressive piece of software, but even for me it is stripped down a bit too far, it seems.
i miss the minimize/maximize features on windows in tinywm, and i also miss ALT+TAB support.
menu and panel are not required for me. anything can be done via xbindkeys.
@ Jens - I think it would be a great idea to use JWM as an option. It is easy to configure, light as a feather, and nice to look at. I personally don't like Rox filemanager but it works with Thuner and others as well.

ElderV.LaCoste,
yes, i don't like ROX either - and guess what, THUNAR is my favorite ! ![]()
I only wish it had a dual-pane view like MIDNIGHT COMMANDER...
NAUTILUS can do that (press F3 to toggle), but it is way too heavy.
That's funny that you should mention the dual-pane view because I actually just discovered it in Nautilus. I found it very useful. However sometimes I found myself forgetting which pane I was coping to/from, but that's my problem lol. Yep, Thunar is my favorite too.
Yep imo .. jwm is an option.
Why not ? You can install a bunch if ya feel like it. I've come to like awesome window manager more. Think they ( jwm vs awesome) use about the same resourcewise anyway. Apt-get awesome and awesome-extra and there ya go, a bit more to configing the sucker, less than w jwm I think, happen to really like it now. Esp if ya fiddle with it, I put the default taskbar on the bottom of the screen instead of top and changed the default shortcuts n added some keybindings. Still have some cosmetic tweaks to do, haven't gotten around to all that yet.
Awesome has a kewl lil default for running apps, can't remember what it was default, but changed it to be F2 on this OS. Kinda like the gmrun thingy. Personally see nothing wrong w trying stuff and finding what someone likes, awesome's become default for me. Not that there's anything at all wrong w openbox either, shrugs. I likely light gnu/Linux, this puppy idles @ 36mbs ! Woot ! ![]()
I have awesome and jwm both installed still though. Takes a couple secs to switch with gdm. Might try it and see whatcha think OP.
vll folks ! ![]()

It looks nice, tbh. A very workable WM.
I'm using dwm though, and think I'll be using tiling WMs forever now.
Yeah, Awesome is nice. I went down that road and then I switched to Scrotwm and that was cool too. It is just so cool that we have so many options to play with! ![]()
^+1 ElderV.LaCoste ...
Feel sorry for the folks who only want ( can only handle) 1 choice. Same time, feel sorry for all us gnu/nix lovers too, lol. Soooooo many choices n more choices. Think it's a good kinda pita though. ![]()
vll !
