Topic: How'd this Distro get it's name?

I've always been drawn to #!, for many reasons. But today -just now, in fact- I realised another reason why I like this Distro so much.

The name!!

Crunch = The action of compressing something.

Bang = Well, yeah. Explosion, right?

Crunched up into a small Distro, (small enough to fit onto CD, and small enough to be really light on the resources).

Bang.... What a bang you get when you start using it!!! Bang!!! The outward stretch in all directions that this Distro takes. The fact that you can carry on in any of those directions for as long as you need, ever tinkering and fiddling and tweaking and making it juuuuust right. To give you such a bang when you use it!!

Was this intentional? Has anyone thought of this before?

Re: How'd this Distro get it's name?

Other reasons I like #!....

It's a lot like bread!!!

Good on it's own if you've got nothin' else, or you can't be bothered with food.

It can have pretty much anything and everything put on top of it (or underneath it, or even in the middle of it), and it still seems to work alright.

There's no limits as to how many ingredients you can have on here, it's as filling or as trim as you like it.

If you'd prefer to toast it, or cut the crusts off, or alter it in any way you see fit, you're free to do so.

It goes with pretty much anything else you've got. If you want to recover your shizzle from a busted AMD 64bit NetBook with no CD drive, it's totally doable!! If you'd want to shrink down your Windows partition to make room for another OS, that's easily done as well. If you're testing new hardware before you commit to an install, no problem!!

I also like it's feel. I know, that sounds stupid, and what I am about to type is goin' to sound even worse, but....

It does what it does, without the excess. But it also manages to look good while doin' it. Sure, if you wanted to mess around and put Wobbly Windows on there, you probably could. But I'd sacrifice that for Conky any day!! (And have done).

Alright, I'm goin' to try and get to my point from a different angle....

PC, Personal Computer.

Personal, something that belongs to you, and is yours to do with as you please.

So, am I so wrong to speculate that a person's computer is somewhat a reflection of their lifestyle? Or maybe a glimpse into their personality?

I like that it gets the job done before anything else. If it can add a little glamor to the event, it will do so. But it gets things done. Simply and efficiently. If you don't like how things are done, you can change them manually, and pretty simply.

But it goes deeper than this. Again, it's the FEEL, the black and white, the trim lines and lack of clutter. There's just something about it. It's alluring. Mystic and bare at the same time.

Alright, now I'm pretty sure you all think I'm crazy, I'm goin' to stop typing.

I don't think there was a single question in this post. Usually that would bother me, but I don't care this time. Why? Because I'm only stating why and how much I enjoy this little bit of software. It's different to all the other Distros that I've tried...... It's, well, it seems like what I'd be if I myself were a distro.

(I knew I should of stopped typing!! tongue ).

Aha!! I see this now. Thanks for the info Dubois. ^_^

You guys were goin' to rename #! at one point, weren't you? Because you were sticking with Debian stable releases.

To be honest, I'm glad you guys stuck with this name.

Now knowin' what the name means, gives me that little sense of danger when I use my machine. : D

Re: How'd this Distro get it's name?

Basically, CrunchBang sounds cooler than shebang (the usual pronounciation of the #! you see at the start of many shell scripts); plus it let Philip/corenominal (our distro's sole developer) give the distro a more colorful disclaimer than the standard boilerplate.

When Philip switched from Ubuntu to Debian as the base for CrunchBang, he decided to ditch the old year/month numbering scheme (which followed Ubuntu) an just start over at 10;  He also decided to go with Muppet names for the releases.  Since CrunchBang 10 is named Statler, it just makes sense that CrunchBang 11 will be Waldorf; the fact that Statler and Squeeze have the same initial letter is most likely a coincidence, and I don't think anyone on the Debian team had announced the name for the next Debian release (Wheezy) until long after Statler was named, so whatever comes after Wheezy...don't expect CrunchBang 12 to have the same initial.

o0o!!!

Thanks Pvsage. That was a really interesting read. ^_^

So glad I joined this forum, you guys are awesome.

Why did Philip choose Muppet names do you think? Is he just a fan.... Or is there something more sinister goin' on there. **Shifty eyes**

Re: How'd this Distro get it's name?

^ No, he is just a big fan, nothing "shifty eyes" about it.

#!, all else is but a shadow!

Re: How'd this Distro get it's name?

Corenominal chose Muppet-names because his real name is Jim Henson. just look it up, they look exactly the same. for example, they both have beards.

Re: How'd this Distro get it's name?

Oh, definitely something *shifty eyes* going on.  Philip's got a massive Muppet fetish...

I'm sure it's just for LULz, like the Toy Story character names for Debian releases.

Re: How'd this Distro get it's name?

This is getting more and more interesting post by post, is there maybe a Mupppet conspiracy...

#!, all else is but a shadow!

Re: How'd this Distro get it's name?

This is a pretty juicy conspiracy theory we've got right here!!

Juicy and weird enough to be interesting, with someone important enough to threaten our whole way of life.... And it even brings in memories of our childhoods and could possibly tarnish them if this happens to be true.

I guess like most things in life, there's no way to prove or disprove. We could always ask The Master himself. But who'd admit to this sort of thing?

Can I please suggest we hold an intervention and confront him outright? This place is private enough for that, right????

.......It's even more creepy if they look alike. o _ o

Where's the pictures someone superimposed of corenominal over a muppet head, um, Dr. Bunsen, I presume.  I've looked for the thread off and on over the past weekend but couldn't find it to repost here.  A bit of help, please?  [If not for chuckles then to fuel the fires of ShadeOfHades' overly vivid imagination]   wink

Only downside about the nickname '#!' is that most social networking (etc) sites take anything prefixed with a hash as a tag.

All we ever were, just zeroes and ones.
