Topic: Greetings from a disgruntled Ubuntu user

I sincerely hope I'm not too grumpy, opinionated and pessimistic for this forum.

Here's a detailed explanation as to how I arrived here:  http://is.gd/Adq6xy

And here's a bit about me if anyone's curious:

Born & raised in upstate New York, I attended Syracuse University in the school of Visual & Performing Arts, majoring in Metalsmithing.  Upon completing school, instead of becoming a jeweler or some other form of metalsmithing professional, I moved to New Orleans and began pursuing a career in the IT field, specializing in personal computer diagnostics and repair.

While in New Orleans I met my beautiful future wife and mother of four beautiful daughters, and upon her urging became a tour guide for the famous Haunted History Tours, Inc. of New Orleans.  Somehow I became comfortable with communicating with large audiences, despite my acute stage fright.

My wife and I were married on December 11th, 2000 and lived together in New Orleans until September, 2005.  We were forced to evacuate the flooded city with our two daughters while my wife was pregnant with our third, during the aftermath immediately following Hurricane Katrina.  This experience has brought me to a new level of understanding about the meaning of life and what is truly important, and I am forever grateful that my family survived the disaster relatively unscathed.

I currently live with my family in the middle of nowhere (west central Ohio), and try to keep myself sane by fiddling with Drupal website development, Ubuntu LAMP server administration, playing video games on my custom computer and laptop, and I am starting to collect and teach myself how to repair classic arcade game systems.  My arcade collection currently includes Pole Position, Moon Patrol, Invasion: The Abductors and Soul Calibur III.  I presently work full time in the IT field as a support consultant and lead technician.

OMG that's just too much disgruntled to read at one sitting.  roll  lol

There.  We both got it out our systems.  May I welcome you to the forums.  Enjoy a steaming cup of jasmine tea and some anise cookies.

My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.

Yeah, I get pretty long-winded sometimes.  Thanks for the tea, I need it.  smile

Welcome to the refugee camp! smile

A very interesting personal article you wrote.

For me the answer is Debian and therefore a good derivative such #! is. Enjoy.

It's always a good time for a Guinness.  Much obliged. <tips hat>

Re: Greetings from a disgruntled Ubuntu user

Should've known a pint of Guinness would trump a Jasmine tea.  Does Google know this??

Welcome to the forums!

@my two cents on the fglrx driver issues: The fglrx drivers suck hard regardless of the distribution (I've never got them working perfectly in arch, ubuntu, debian or mageia/mandrake). Crunchbang/Debian is no exception (unless you are using stable branch), the one in testing for example logs me out of the X server every time I play a video or video chat on skype, yes there are work arounds for this (changing video outputs, downgrading x and etc. ), but frankly I think  it's just better to use the open source drivers. With some tweaking they are not actually half bad smile

Re: Greetings from a disgruntled Ubuntu user

hi Valkyri9, welcome to the community. i hope you'll find a nice new home here.

Re: Greetings from a disgruntled Ubuntu user

I already feel like I'm home.  Yes, Guinness trumps all tea, sorry.  You'll feel fresher when you've had a Guinness.  big_smile

@gensym Yeah I'm pretty much resigned to my fglrx fate at this point. It was mainly the knowledge that what used to work pretty good now was sucking hardcore after so much effort on my part that broke the camel's back. I'm planning on installing the 11/25/2011 Statler release once I finish backing up a few things I missed.

Re: Greetings from a disgruntled Ubuntu user

Thanks for sharing Valkyri9, welcome to #!, relax, unblock, unbloat  and you will be free.

By the way, I wanted to say thank you to everyone.  I've written another (much less disgruntled) blog post after playing with #! for a few days.  http://is.gd/6A2noP

Overall I'm a much happier camper than I was. Thank you again!
