Topic: Informal Introduction
Hi. As a quick introduction, I run a mix of Ubuntu (netbook), Debian, FreeBSD, and CentOS, and OS X at home. I am mostly a Debian and Ubuntu user for the last few years and tried #! on a couple of laptops recently that were previously running Debian and Ubuntu. I tried to love the new Ubuntu but realize it has different goals than what I am looking for.
I do a LOT of desktop virtualization using both VMware and VirtualBox and both are happy on #!. Since my laptops are cheapies the lean nature of #! RAM and resource usage for the base OS means there is more left for the VM guests.
I also am extremely impressed with the straightforward layout and easy customization of #!. I was looking for an alternative to the endless KDE vs Gnome,, Gnome with Unitity, Gnome shell. Blah! Debian with LXDE is another combination I kind of like but I find #! more to my liking. Anyway that is about it for me.
Age? Let's just say I am probably older than most on this forum and, in fact, older than a lot of the fathers of those on this forum. I am still working in IT part time in a small Windows (yuck!) based environmental engineering company.
