Topic: Good evening everyone!

Hi eveyone!

I've just had a mini-success today: Managed to buy a shell of an IBM ThinkPad T42 off ebay for £16, cannibalised some parts (hard drive, battery etc.) from my previous dead one, and it's alive!

With this, I was going to try out some linux distros to install on a hard drive, but after running #! as I live usb, I think I've found my brand already!

I love the simplicity of the style, as well as how everything (wifi, sound, flash etc) just worked right away.

The only issue I have is that the handy looking shortcuts displayed on the desktop all use 'Super'+... another key. I assume this means the windows key, but my keyboard doesn't actually have one as it's over 7 years old at this point. I'll have a poke around the options and see if I can remap it to Ctrl+Alt+.... if possible.

Anyway, I wanted to be sure to say hi, as I can imagine I'll be spending a decent amount of time here on the forums!

My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.

Welcome to #! and the ThinkPad club as well (T30 here). Watch the T4x series -- there's some sort of solder issue that plays havoc with the motherboards (or something like that). I can't remember if it's the 42 or 43 that has that problem.

Yup, this is my 3rd T42!

The graphics chip starts to come loose off the motherboard over time, not at all helped by picking up the laptop by the corners etc.. I can't really complain, I'm on my third laptop in just over 3 years, have spent less than £150 in total over that time, and have tested out a fair number of linux distros (all while enjoying the lovely keyboard).

Carrying pieces over from ThinkPad to ThinkPad is a bit odd though... one stick of 512MB RAM has been in all three. I think I should call it Dax!
