Topic: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

I'm just curious how people chose their screen name and avatar -- there is a wide range of both here.

I'll start, but it should be fairly obvious. My wife and I have too many animals, including too many dogs. We have three now, but we had four until last summer when my wife's favorite died from lymphoma. He's the dog in my avatar.

(edit) -- I changed my avatar (I figured if VastOne could do it it was OK) -- the new avatar is Pidsley the cat from the Shaun the Sheep animated series.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

My screen name is just my first & middle initials, followed by my surname.  I use the same screen name just about everywhere.

Avatar is Charles Foster Offdensen, the manager & CFO of Dethklok in the Adult Swim cartoon Metalocalypse.

As for the rest of my profile information...a few people here have told me CFO looks like Dr. Willis, the American doctor brought in by Section Six to help reign in Project 2501 in the first Ghost in the Shell movie.  I'm rather familiar with the anime and know what Dr. Willis looks like...I don't see it, but since these people kept addressing me as "Dr. Willis"... roll

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

i just picked the most complicated way i could think of to write my first name, which is 'Roald'. really nice cause it still sounds like my real name, it is still readable like my real name, and it is completely unique on the internet.

^ and your avatar?

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

My name is based on my most used programming languages over the last 20 years...
SQL and Python

My avatar has been with me about 10 years and represents the Linux (the penguin) Vs.  Microsoft (the BEAR):D

Aughhhh!!  Just realized that this is one of the Few Forums that I use an Xfce avatar.. my usual Avatar is not available as imageshack is down......

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

Very boring: Initial of my first name (Larry) tacked onto my last name (Cafiero). It's what I've been going by online for centuries -- OK, years (since the mid-'90s) -- and there's no need to change it now.

The avatar of Tux wearing a Grateful Dead tie-dye logo is something I picked up a few years ago from someone in Humboldt County, California, who had it as their avatar (yes, I asked his permission to use it). Linux and the Grateful Dead make up a significant part of my interests, so it's a good match for me, and any Deadheads out there who want to use it are free to do so.

Oh. The avatar under your name looks like the Xfce mouse. Do I need stronger glasses?

My nickname, from... always. Since I was born.

My late dog Dingo is and will forever be my avatar.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

Mine was from the tour of duty with Mint, as is Hint-O-Mint.  There was a cartoon a the time, too (I can't put my finger on it on You Tube) that had the character trying to re-create the lipstick from the girl he fell in love with.  The avatar is Green Hornet (tho his side-kick is Cato).  I though it looked nice with the green themes from Mint.  I had a previous username/avatar when I started Linux, but abandoned it since Marvel canceled his monthly issue.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

Honestly can't recall why I chose my nick. Just putting 2 random words together, I guess.
Avatar is a self-portrait, obviously. Clean-shaven, but otherwise stock slob.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

My nick has been mine forever... Came from always winning Trivial Pursuit ... roll

I had a House Avatar that I used until Sector11 made this one which represents several of my passions

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

Well my name came from the disease: Dysphagia

Dysphagia is the medical term for the symptom of difficulty in swallowing. I added a z to add more zah to it. It fits because people have trouble swallowing my opinions.

I currently have no avatar as I'm too mentally challenged to find one and I have no skill at making one

Rin: I won’t say ‘See you tomorrow’ because that would be like predicting the future, and I’m pretty sure I can’t do that.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

@VastOne: If you never mention it, I didn't noticed so many things are in that avatar. Cool. smile

My nickname is Kowloonboy, which is actually two words put together. Kowloon and Boy, Kowloon (In Hong Kong) is the place where I lived and born when I was a boy. So that makes kowloonboy.

Also there is actually another slang for Kowloon Boy in Hong Kong. Kowloon Boy are the people who came and take a share of you winning when you leave the casino. tongue

Actually I use this name quite a lot, but unfortunately, some other people have also used it before me in various social network. So the Kowloonboy account you see in flicker and so on don't belong to me. hmm

The avatar is a picture of Bruce Lee with Jeet Kune Do logo next to it.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

I have been using my name for as far back as I can remember.. It's from "Ring around the Rosies" "We all fall down". Which is a nursery rhyme about the black plague. Kinda creeped me out as a kid and just stuck with me.

EDIT Changed avatar to a tux that I manipulated for #!.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

The nick was a creation while listening too much to the music of Mano Negra, a French Ska/Patchanka band with Manu Chao as one of the members. Ivanov, obviously from Ivan, my Spanish friends would never call me by my f****** real name and always think all people from Eastern Europe are Ivans etc.

The avatar is also a self portrait. It is the real Ivan. smile

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

My username came about when people didn't like typing out a username I had that had no alphanumeric characters at all. They picked V to be my letter, and V is too short for usernames.

Avatar is a #! QR code that needs updated for the new website.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

My username is just the initial of my first name followed by my surname and D.O.B... Boring but easy to remember!! My avatar is a picture of me playing guitar with my band at the Eastney Cellars which is a local music venue.

-Edit: By the way, VastOne: I always liked your avatar! Love how it combines the screaming face from 'The Wall' with Hugh Laurie! It confused me when I first saw it though! big_smile

If it aint broke.... then I'll try as hard as I can to fix it til it is broke!

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

^ thanks... It also has some golf references in it

What is the guitar?  I play and have thought about one of me playing as well...  What type of band and music?

@kowloonboy - Thanks!

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

a quite interesting question!
so: my username refers to nothing, really. a bead maze is an educating play-something for kids called "motorikschleife" in german (my native language) and looks like those http://www.motorikschleife.net/
i only use this username at lastfm - from where you'd be able to guess my "real name" in case you're one of those it-detectives...
my avatar is me, of course.

Pancakes
1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 eggs, 1 cup of  milk, 3 tbs water, 1-2 tsp of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 apple, few grains of salt
Preheat your pan or griddle to about medium heat. Slowly combine the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, work in sliced apple. Each pancake should take about a minute or so on each side. Serve with plum jam, maple syrup, or powdered sugar

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

@SuperVast: Man, NOW I see the golf in your avatar! smile

Whenever I see Hugh Laurie, now I know his name smile, I think actually that it's you. Never watched the series or whatever he does.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

^ .. thanks Ivan...  The only thing i have in common with Hugh Laurie is as a musician... with House, I am just as much of a cynical bastard!

Thank the gods to Sector11 for the subtleties in my avatar..  he did me right in creating that one.. cool

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

My username is from when I was 12 and I started playing computer games. I had to pick something, so I just picked a random word and misspelled it, and never really thought of anything better to change it to. My avatar is just a picture of one of my decks.

Re: How did you choose your screen name and avatar?

I like to pretend being a girl internets, so I decided to use my sister's name and picture because she looks normal. tongue
