^ Good Joke on all us, then! ![]()
My long-term goal is to finally get to run Gentoo to satisfy my craving for fine-tuning and the bleeding edge.
Maybe during the summer break.
I waited years for Squeeze to go steady, having used Debian Etch first then began distro-hopping -- too many bad memories, like looking for love in all the wrong places.
I realized last night as I dozed off here in my chair that I could swap out the words Squeeze and Sid and my post from last night would still make sense. ![]()
I want, need the stability that Debian Squeeze offers and I like Xfce more than other interfaces, why, I don't know, but sometimes you just gotta go looking, trying, testing something else. Call it distro-hopping, call it window shopping we [I assume] all do it. ![]()
This doesn't mean I won't ever run Sid again but, at least, not for now or a long time to come. Since Halloween I reckon I tried Debian's Wheezy, Sid, Openbox and Xfce's 4.6 and 4.8 [nice, nice, nice] and both versions of #! Statler, prefering the February release to the November one, but that's a preference.
This thread isn't closed, oh, no. Thanks to vicshrike and xaos52. BTW xaos, my post http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/181375/#p181375 was entirely tongue-in-cheek. And it was late, for me, so gosh knows what I wrote or intended to write but it looks real fine to me now. ![]()
EDIT -- corrected some run-on words

I'm waiting for Wheezy to become stable so Waldorf will soon be released, and we finally have a new #!. While I love the bleeding edge, I love the stability of Squeeze/Statler for the most part as well. Ultimate goal is a dual boot between #! and Gentoo so I get the best of both worlds.

Gentoo and Arch are two distros that quickly come to mind that I haven't tried. Oh, and Vector Linux. I did get Fedora 14 to run sporadically on my 701 4G SSD with 1GB RAM but it was a poor enough performance to make me want to scream. ![]()
Tried Arch on a VM twice. Got frustrated both times.
Maybe Gentoo would not be for me...

BTW, I'm a woman.
Real women compile!
The first thin to note is
apt-get build-dep package will build the dependencies for a package in the repos. Also,
install apt-file - sudo apt-get install apt-file. Then, as regular user, run
apt-file updateto generate a list. From then on it's
apt-file search <weird dependency spat out by a configure error>also as regular user.
Out of curiosity is that your blog linked in your sig line? Oh, gotta run, I've got a pot of grits cooking on the stove and it smells so good. ![]()
Yeah, but I haven't posted in WAY too long. I have a post on my drafts, but sadly, real life got in the way. ![]()
el_koraco: Thanks for the info! Now I'll look for an app to compile. ![]()

Oh dear, I can see that you are in trouble. dubois! You need a double dose of #! Statler. And read the whole distro-hopper anonymous thread, if that doesn`t help? Hop away!
Real men write their own applications ![]()

I did that this past summer. It's a strange thread anyway but to read it front to back, without pause really can twist your head. ![]()
