Topic: There's Hope for Linux Yet...

Hey #!ers,

Been using linux for many years. My first experience was with Red Hat 3 back in '97 and I then moved on to Fedora Core. With the discontinuation of Red Hat and Fedora Core becoming the Fedora Project, I spent the next few years trying many different distro's (I even spent a while using my own custom distro) but they all lacked what I was looking for in an OS. Eventually, in recent years, I started becoming slightly disillusioned with linux and where it seemed to be going.

Without offending anyone, I don't like the direction some of the more "popular" linux distro's such as Ubuntu, Mint and OpenSuse seem to be taking. They've become too big and bloated and dare I say it, almost too "Windowsey".

In my quest for something lighter, simpler and closer to the linux experience I enjoyed years ago, I stumbled upon #! quite by accident. I'm happy to report that there's still hope for linux and thanks to #!, there's light at the end of the tunnel. I've never been more satisfied and impressed with an OS as I have been in the short time I've been using #!. It's like being a young kid at Christmas all over again.

Thanks to everyone who's been involved in the creation of #!. You've given an old linux user hope again.

Thank you kindly; it's the letter 'O' with a crow perched in the center. A few years ago I embarked on the somewhat daunting task of attempting to build my own little distro which I called 'Crow Linux'. It took me many years to get it to an acceptable, working point and I'm actually still using it to run a small media server at home.

Pointless 2 cents worth of babbling.

Imo, yep dare say it. With so many around and gnu/nix being pretty much whatever someone feels like making it. Think those and many others serve a purpose. Aka: Gnu/Linux for the masses, people that don't want to learn anything not gui and don't want to go further than point and click, shrugs. Which is good cause at least they'll have a user friendly gnu/nix OS they can use instead of M$ or Mac. While all us #! fans have this great distro to use. So it's a win/win I guess.

As always not that it matters, all of those you named have mucho alternatives too. You don't have to opt for the bloated releases, unless you choose to. LM has so many diff things to choose from, will make someone dizzy. Buntu ( though I don't like em), same thing. If I remember right Opensuse has an option to build your own iso from the ground up ... Suse studio or labs or whatever.

Just an opinion, it's all gnu/nix ... More users and people taking advantage of all the great FOSS out there, the better. It's been a M$ PC world wayyyyyyy tooooooo longgggggggg.

Some common cbiz abbreviations. This will save me time and yet @ same time tell folks what the babble is supposed to mean.

Good morning, afternoon or evening as the case may be fortyseven and welcome to #! forum.  I believe you'll find any number of people running any number of distros here.  Grab a chair and set a spell.  I'll make a pot of beans and some cornbread for later.  big_smile

yep, welcome!  Nice post.  And after your beans and cornbread, enjoy a beer or two...on the house.  We have two main categories of $DRINK_OF_CHOICE, beer and coffee.

the rocky path may just be the best path.
