Topic: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

I am in the process of making a custom build for the aspire one series of netbooks. For all the AAO users, what packages would you like to see included by default? I am leaning towards tint2, trayer, pcmanfm, and wicd for definite inclusion but am open for suggestions for bundled software. Ideas?

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

a proper mp3-player or the ability to enqueue mp3-files in a playlist out of the file-browser........

need a master that is teaching me proper linux-commandline-kungfu

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Xchat for irc
midnight commander file manager for console.
madwifi as ath5k sux , drops out with large files like ISOs
acerhdf is a kernel module to control the fan, much better than acerfand. http://www.piie.net/index.php?section=acerhdf
Ext4 and iptables support in kernel

PunBB bbcode test

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Just make it as lite as possible. You can always install apps you need.
And how about renaming it CrunchOne? tongue

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Yeah I'm looking more towards going light. Probably not going to include any media player except perhaps MOC. The software included will probably be kept to a minimum for speed and space. Probably going with the kernel haggis has been working on as I haven't had the time to compile a custom kernel yet. With all luck we should have CrunchOne ready for testing in mid-late April.

Thanks for doing this, acydlord. You are a star! smile

Sounds good. Hopefully you'll include the acerhdf module though. It'd be nice to know it's already included in the iso (img) file.

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Please, no openoffice on default. Installing LITE to my other AAO now and it has been installing openoffice for 20min now. this really sucks.
dot.

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

hello acydlord

cool! i would like to have also lite apps like mutt, moc, of course the mad-wifi drivers for wlan, nano editor and so on..

thanx for doing this! i am glad to install it.. big_smile

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Lets hope acydlord have made some progress tongue
Haggis has some kerneles compiled (and madwifi modules, i failed and those did not work for me). He might drop url to us smile

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

I'm hoping to use the kernels Haggis has been working on. I've set up a launchpad under the name CrunchOne. I will update on there with the full software list and kernel revisions. I also created an IRC channel on Freenode #CrunchOne.

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Decided to map out the brainstorming on CrunchOne so far, this is what it looks like https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/150051/crunchonemap.jpg

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Hi everybody!!

I own an Acer Aspire One and use it with #! and the Kuki Kernel + Madwifi drivers. I set up everything following the instructions on the Wiki and the only thing that I had to add was a specific option for the usbserial module, in order to use my USB 3G modem (Novatel Ovation MC950D). The modem was correctly recognized with the standard kernel, but not with the Kuki kernel.

I would like to contribute my 2 cents about making CrunchOne:

  • 1st of all, thanks for trying to make it easier for AAO users to use #!

  • Maybe it would be better to provide the same software as in the LITE edition, and focus on the kernel optimization and the necessary scripts to provide compatibility with the hardware

  • USB 3G Modems are very useful for these netbooks, so it would be interesting to keep in mind that compatibility.

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Newbie Alert!

The above sounds great, just make the installation instructions idiot proof.

That is a very good point as I'm gonna be changing my sprint plan to include one of the USB modems once the Pre comes out. I'll definitely make sure we get USBSerial into the final kernel.

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Would it be possible to just add some detection for the AA1 into the current #! builds and just tweak the #! install so it all works out of the box?

I know my install of the full #! on my AA1 went pretty smooth.  Just tweaked some config files, compiled madwifi, compiled acerhdf module and was good to go.

Also if you do install a custom kernel with support for acerhdf be aware that some AA1's with BIOS 3309 use a different command to turn off the fan.  On those systems the fan will turn off, but after about 10 seconds or so the system just hard resets.  It can be fixed by using the proper off command.  But that command won't work on other AA1's with 3309.  So it is a little sketchy.

Also I use to use the kuki (sickboy) kernel, but found myself building my own for things like truecrypt support, gamepad, and usb to serial adaptors.   It is tough doing a cut down kernel and supporting most of the "common" stuff people need.

Looking forward to seeing what you come out with!  Kudos for doing it.

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

Will it also support the new Intel Atom N280?

About the name; why not call it "CrunchBang-O"? That's pretty close to the original name and it also has a nice ring to it. Ring. Get it? big_smile

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

What's the current status of this little project?

Re: CrunchyONE (AAO build)

I am aao 110 user and i do not see why to make new release for aao users when existing #! works better than fine. Nice idea i just don`t see the point.
