Topic: Hi ya all~

Today I finally got my lazy self to remove Lubuntu from my good old HP Presario to try what others had been swearing to me for months: the little but oh so great Crunchbang~ And I'm loving it so far.

I love the speed, I love the minimal look, I love getting my hands to configure it-and I've never been so hooked with a distro before (trust me, I've tried a LOT). I'm also so happy to see how it also has such a friendly forum to back it up.
Being a student is not easy and I have been using the same laptop for over 5 years now. It has always been slow in everything I installed in it and now I'm happy with it for the first time ever. (yes, it was slow even in the XP I got it with)

So hi and I hope there's room for another thrilled user!

Peanuts! Popcorn!  Hey, now!  Getcha beer, ice cold beer, right heeeerrrreee.  yikes

We can't help you with your grades, that's up to you, but I'll bet someone here runs a system like yours and can give you some pointers.  Just ask.  Only one or two of us bite if not fed regularly.  roll

Here ya go.  Free peanuts and free beer for the new guy [generic term]

Re: Hi ya all~

Hi guys~ Thanks @pv-sage, @VastOne, @Vansgo, @dubois~

I've got a question: Is there anywhere a short (or better yet, long) summary at how Crunchbang started, evolved and it's future? I'd like to be informed and all.   ..what can I say, everything just works so I'm only left with history and trying to break it myself. tongue

Re: Hi ya all~

hi U-Ren, welcome to the community! for a #! history, maybe you could just try reading the blog (backwards?): http://crunchbanglinux.org/blog/

Re: Hi ya all~

Welcome to #! and forums U-Ren, there is always room for another thrilled #! user here. Yes, the community is great, friendly, fun, and very helpful. By the way, nice coffee avatar you got, there are a lot of coffee talk here so I presume that you will fit in perfectly.

#!, all else is but a shadow!

Re: Hi ya all~

Hey there!!! Nice to finally get to meet you!!

What is it your studying exactly? How're you findin' it?

I also have a Prsario (It's a Compaq CQ61). What model number do you have? Wish I could give you some tips and shizzle more refined to your type of system, but I'm not so good at the Linux yet. Though, everything worked out the box, and I'm assuming so for you as well, right?

Anyways, yeah, do make yourself at home. And it'll be good to interact with you throughout the forums!!

Re: Hi ya all~

@rhowaldt: Thanks for the suggestion, I've been reading since yesterday and enjoying every minute.

@vicshrike: Well, haha-I had no idea what to put on the avatar in a linux forum. neutral  You can't do gaga or anime here without looking weird, can you? lol  Plus, everybody loves coffee~ big_smile

@ShadeOfHade  Hi~ I'm studying Pharmacy, about halfway though. So far, so good!
Ohhhh-but your Presario is much better than mine *envious* XD  I have a V4000T which is, lemme tell you, a sluggish (1.5 Ghz Celeron, 512mb RAM, 40 Gb HDD) and whiny little laptop. I wanted to sell it and get a netbook but then changed my mind. Those things are slow and look like made of cheap plastic, so I think I'm just getting an upgrade to my Presario.
Yes, pretty much everything works but the wireless and bluetooth. I use those rarely though so no harm done. I'm probably going to ponder around to resolve the issue...or not, lol.

as long as your avatar is not offensive (on purpose), you can be as weird as you like. in fact, some users here are making a dayjob out of looking weird on the forums. i won't give names though.

Welcome to #! U-Ren,

Re: Hi ya all~

@rhowalt  But I had no idea it was such a laid back, friendly forum! I've been active in Ubuntu for a very short time and I found it rather ...er, opinionated. Probably it was all in my head, idk.

@TitanMech Hi~ smile

never been there, but from the stories i've heard it wasn't all in your head.

i daresay we here have the friendliest linux community of them all. not that i've been part of many, this is actually the only one. but there must be a reason why people keep hanging out here even when they are not using #! (anymore).

Re: Hi ya all~

Pharmacy!?!?!?! Awesome!!! If you know whta you're doin', it seems like a pretty easy job, right? Just make sure that dose isn't goin' to kill someone when they take it (double checking really, since that's the doctors job). Then bein' able to tell people about medicine and helpin' them out with a few doctory thingies.

Yeah, complicated stuff, lots to remember, but once you know all that jazz, it sounds like quite a good job.

I bet this means you're really engaging, and good with people, right? I get the impression from your text that you're a more of a listener (rather than a talker). But when you do speak, you choose you're words and are rather articulate.

Also, I bet you enjoy order and believe everything has it's place in life. (or at least everything you own!! tongue ).

Sorry, I sort of DO this to people some times. Please don't be offended. >_<

As for your laptop......

If I were to upgrade it, I'd upgrade the RAM. I'm sorry that you're jealous of my laptop, but I tell you, it cost a pretty penny!! I only upgraded my RAM a few weeks back, and it seemed a pretty simple process. There's a site you can go to which will help you figure out how much RAM it can take, I can't for the life of me remember what it is though.

And yeah, I've got a Netbook, they over-heat really fast, and soon complain once you try and do ANYTHING more than surf the web. Also, they don't like to be tinkered with under the hood, it's a bugger tryin' to take one apart and upgrading it.

I also am havin' some issues with the Wi-Fi by the way, seems a common issue amongst Linux users in general (not just #!, or even Debian!!!). I've heard that Wicd is a good program to start with if you're tryin' to fix it. If not, there's PLENTY of people in here who're really friendly and good at The Linux. : D

Re: Hi ya all~

@pvsage, @rhowaldt  The main problem in there is that there are too many people, most of which are new to linux and unable to google. Or read. Or both. This drives the saner users crazy=hostile, angry forum.
See, I'm no expert (actually, did I mention being a complete idiot? no? cos I am) but at least I'm aware that a) google and man pages are my friends  b)I can't expect everything to work in Linux. It's free, it's unstable and it's breakable.
I still wander around there since there are lots of valuable information, howto, ect. Plus-the 'Unity hate mail' will never stop being funny~ lol

@eren, @muzieca Thanks~

@ShadeofHades
Lol man, did you just try to read my poker face? (is there a bet going on?) XD
Now let's see: Being a Pharmacist, at least where I live is really an easy job. Thing is, you'll never meet a happy Pharmacist-it's in out nature to complain all the time. Best line: Our job is so boring!
As for being a listener, haha, I try. tongue

For the laptop: Yes, I KNOW how much they used to cost back in days. Thus why I won't part with it (seriosly, 20 bucks in not worth it.)
Don't worry about the RAM, I know exactly what type and how much my Presario needs. I'm going to upgrade it this week. smile
I made bluetooth work but still no wireless.  I guess I'll poke around it again when I feel like it.

...and you're going to be dispensing powerful medications to unsuspecting patients??? yikes lol  Really, I shouldn't joke about this...it's so easy to misread a scrip...have you seen the Dr. G episode where a pharmacist closed up shop because he accidentally dispensed Methadone for an ADD patient instead the prescribed Methylphenidate? sad

Actually, you thoroughly refute your own claim to idiocy with the following:

at least I'm aware that a) google and man pages are my friends  b)I can't expect everything to work in Linux. It's free, it's unstable and it's breakable.

I'd say this puts you ahead of at least 90% of the pack. wink

Yeaaah. Getting arrested has always been my dream. XDD
....I'm kinda happy that my country thinks that our doctors are corrupted/aren't prepared enough to decide-it makes them question the doctor exactly what the hell are they prescribing. Makes my job a lot easier.

You'd think Linux community oughta be a bit smarter (when I was a kid, I used to worship the people who could use Red Hat, lol) but diversity means popularity. Which should be..a good thing? Still not sure how people feel about that.

while i agree that is a problem, i think the main problem is people's patience with these people. the 'helpers' know exactly what they are getting themselves into, and they shouldn't bitch about it. just explain to them what they should do, and if they persist in not doing it, just don't answer them anymore, and they'll leave. luckily i've never seen that kind of situation on these forums here.
