Re: Think this is too much for #!

^ Thats essentially what I use, only 8 gig of RAM and Phenom 965 black quads and one TB drives.

#! blazes on it....

Re: Think this is too much for #!

Not to come off as fanboish.

Dude it's Debian ... n gnu/nix. VastOne isn't having major problems getting it to run fine. So might take some know how, but sheesh it's gnu/Linux. It's not too much for #!, might be too much for a particular person trying to use crunchbang for x purposes though. If you don't want to devote time n effort to figuring it out, think yep ... Ya might wanna go with summin else. Not like there's a shortage around. But isn't too much for crunchbang ... Would just be too much time/effort for you to bother investing in it.

Not that I think it'd take all that much. Guessing #! could blaze on just about any architecture going if someone feels like learning their way around. Someone wants to learn how to upgrade kernels ... takes 10mins ... Someone wants to learn to add backports ... not much more. This, that ... the other thing.

In other words ... blahblahblah.

Some common cbiz abbreviations. This will save me time and yet @ same time tell folks what the babble is supposed to mean.

Vll ! = ( Viva la gnu/Linux !)    Vl#!! = ( Viva la #! !)    Last but not least, UD ... OD ! = ( Use Debian ... or die !) tongue

Re: Think this is too much for #!

@jmad2011:  You're joking, right?  There's no such thing as "too much" computer!  The nVidia may be problematic if you intend to use this as a gaming computer; you'd need the proprietary drivers to get all the whiz-bang schmancies out of the graphics card, and you'd need to uninstall the drivers & re-install whenever you get an updated kernel.  Not exactly low-maintenance, but then again, Linux isn't known for being low-maintenance...

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: Think this is too much for #!

^ For the nVidia needs, smxi is a perfect tool, IMHO.

Even if you don't want to use smxi, dkms will rebuild the driver when the kernel updates. Since omns took his blog down, I'll post the instructions here...

Make sure non-free is part of your line in sources.list, then...

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig

When it finishes installing, run...

sudo nvidia-xconfig

... then reboot and log in. Set screen resolution by running 'gksu nvidia-settings' without quotes, go to "X Server Display Configuration", make you changes, "Apply" , "Save to X Configuration File", I uncheck "Merge with existing file", done.

Re: Think this is too much for #!

I've never even had to run nvidia-xconfig since I first installed crunchbang on my machine a few months back. I installed the blob from the nvidia site, and have rolled the kernel at least ten times since then.

Re: Think this is too much for #!

OK, I must be thinking about the ATi/AMD proprietary stuff then...which I also don't use on my ATi/AMD box.  Just going by what I've read posted here.

It used to be the case with AMD drivers installed via the website. Although, dkms has rebuilt the module on my last kernel upgrade, which was an unexpected and pleasant surprise.

Re: Think this is too much for #!

sorry for late reply been working ....i am actully getting ready to test it on the comp tonight.. i  have never had much trouble with nvida now the ati on my laptop is another story now i remeeber why i buy nvidia

Re: Think this is too much for #!

@jmad2011, you reinstalled and got the driver to work?

I just reread my instructions and that method has worked for me every time. Odd.
