Topic: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

Running 'sudo emacs -nw ....' works, but does not give me any of the customizations in my ~/.emacs file. This is because emacs is looking in /home/root/.emacs? I created a soft link from my ~/.emacs to the root's home, but then emacs was not happy about other code it required in ~/.emacs.d/. I'm sure I didn't need to do all this on Ubuntu (I'm not "complaining" about #! and being an Ubuntu fan-boy, I'm just making the comparison) -- so there must be a way around this?

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

It's located in /root/.emacs, so copy the contents from all the config files and folders there.

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

Do not run emacs as root - there is no need to.
You can access any file on any mounted partition from within your user started emacs!
Suppose you want to edit /etc/network/interfaces - owned by root, not allowed to be edited by any normal user:

Ctr+x+f
/sudo::/etc/network/interfaces
You will have to enter your password if you have sudo set up that way.

Emacs - started as your user - will open a buffer, and allow you to edit/write back the buffer

If the file is not even write-able by root, e.g. /boot/grub/grub.cfg

/sudo::/boot/grub
search for grub.cfg: Ctrl+s grub[tab]
enter ! enter
chmod +w enter
the file is loaded and editable
edit it
save
Xtrl + x K
to kill the buffer
! enter
chmod -w
restores the no-write permission for the file

You want to edit a file on /dev/sdd? /dev/sdd is not mounted yet? ( I suppose you have pmount installed - if you have not, install it first )

From within emacs:
Alt + x
pmount /dev/sdd
Ctrl +d
to close the shell
Ctrl + x + f
/sudo::/media/sdd/.....

Emacs is an OS - No need to leave emacs to do anything else - well, almost smile

Edit: I have emacs open full screen in one workspace, iceweasel in another workspace and 3 instances of terminator in a third workspace. I can do everything I want with that setup.

If you poke the bear it is going to come after you.

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

@xaos52: Thanks. I tried your suggestions, but could not get them to work until I realized I have an old tramp-default-proxies-alist setting in my .emac which I need to sort out first.

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

^ I commented out the tramp-proxies thing and restarted emacs and entered the filename as you suggest and it worked. After typing the "e" of "etc" I am prompted for my password and I can then enter the filename I want to edit as root. Thanks.

I see a "@" appears in the mode-line to indicate that I am editing a file on a "remote" machine.

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

^xaos52: Just out of interest -- the emacs you have open and running all the time -- GUI or console version?

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

GUI
Of course I occasionally use emacs at console for repairing things, but there also, I run it as my user, and use the /sudo:: syntax to access files with root permission. I do not keep that instance running all the time.
Cheers.

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

^ I typically use emacs -nw for the console version, although I am familiar with the GUI version. I opened a small (8.5kb) file today in the GUI version. It opened as a non-full-screen window and scrolling through the file was fast and responsive. I maximized the emacs window (1920x1080) and noticed that scrolling was very slow and laggy -- the selection line would jump a few lines at a time. The lines in the text file were fairly short and there was not a large amount of text. I'm using a quad-core machine with 2GB of RAM running #! r20111125 32-bit with an nVidia card and proprietary drivers. Any ideas on why performance in emacs would be so poor?

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

That is not normal. Emacs should fly with those specs.
What video driver are you using?

I have 1280x1024 resolution, but I am using the VESA driver, because KMS does not work for my Nvidia card. I could, and sometimes do install the Nvidia proprietary driver, but usually I do not even bother.

My response times in Emacs are excellent.
I do not have any special scrolling commands in my .emacs - I checked.

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

@xaos52: Thanks. I'm "stuck" in a way because the nouveau drivers (for nVidia) don't always work properly (I've been told/read) and can cause the cards to overheat, but provide proper frame-buffer support and good performance in Firefox/Iceweasel.

The proprietary drivers don't offer proper frame-buffer support and result in very sluggish performance in Firefox/Iceweasel, but don't cause the cards to overheat. Maybe I need to add "Emacs" to the list of programs which have sluggish performance now.

I have on-board Intel graphics IIRC, but have a 22" and 23" monitors connected via DVI to the nVidia, so I can't really switch to using the on-boards graphics without returning to only one monintor.

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

Have you tried the nouveau driver? Perhaps there are still some things that need to be ironed out, but it has improved a lot. I am sure it would solve your Emacs problem.

When it runs too hot, try to find a solution using the pm-tools.

A shame really, not using the full power of that Nvidia card.

Cheers!

Edit: I misread your post. You are using the nvidia driver. What version are you running? Dit you install it using apt-get or did you download the blob from the nvidia site?

Mind posting your

Re: [Solved] Emacs as Root | [Solved] Slow Emacs Scrolling

@xoas52: Returning to the open drivers for my NVidia card not only solved the terribly sluggish performance in IW 9 and 10, but also seems to have solved the Emacs GUI full-screen scrolling issue. I can't recall which file I was scrolling before, but it was 8.5kb according to my post. I've just tested with the Xorg log of ~55kb, and it scrolls fine in the GUI version at 1920x1080 resolution with a selection bar/line. Maybe it was related.
