Topic: VMware player woes

Evening all,

I am a long time virtualbox user, and just this evening I have installed vmware player on my #! laptop install. I use vmware fusion on the mac with no issues but my #! install of vm is driving me insane.

I downloaded and installed vmware player with no problems at all, and imported my backtrack appliance and was up and running in minutes. My issues start with vmware tools.

When I go to select the 'update tools' option I get an error saying "Could not find component on update server. Contact VMware Support or your system administrator." With backtrack already having the tools installed I left it and moved on to creating a new virtual machine and installed debian 6.

Once debian had installed I went to the install tools option and got the same error as stated above. Looking in /usr/lib/vmware/isoimages there are no vmware tools iso's. I manually downloaded them and copied them over the right directory, mounted the linux tools iso in vmware and then began to install the tools.

In the debain vm, I made sure all headers were installed for my current kernel and linked gcc to gcc-4.3.5. Now I am getting another issue saying that the tools cannot locate the C headers in the /usr/src/ directory. I have removed, reinstalled, created symlinks, checked and rechecked and everything is where it should be, but the vmtools installer will not budge.

I hope that was easy to follow. If anyone could point me in the right direction to cure both my problems I would be most grateful.

Thanks in advance!
