Topic: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

yesterday i managed to set up a minimal debian squeeze system via netinstall.
i have to admit i was impressed how simple it was.
after the base install without ANY additional components selected, i only added these packages via "apt-get install" method:

xorg alsa-base jwm xdm midori

et voilà ! happy surfing... smile

never tried an original debian before.
funny to see how easy things are.

EDIT: i completely forgot to mention i did this inside a virtual machine provided by virtualbox.

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

Now that's minimal!  Good deal!  I really prefer the simplicity that's Debian, it can be as small an OS as you choose or as large while still retaining its sense of speed and feeling of being solid.  I think I like that part best.  You ought to consider making a small netinst on your SSD or HDD to really appreciate it.  Why, it even runs fine on a 4GB USB drive!

EDIT -- added be, in first sentence...

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

Yup, once you do a netinstall, it's hard to return to other methods of installing. Plus, configuring LVM via ncurses is priceless.

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

^ I, for one, will take your word on that!  lol

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

Have thought about this a few times. What about specs involved ... Install size on disk, RAM/CPU usage ... etc ? Have found many the minimalistic gnu/nix, #! being the one I've come to like the most. Gotten to the point where if I want anything lighter, know I'd have to build it. Buncha ways to go about that for sure, just too happy with #! to bother messing with it atm. Would be kewl to see some stats though.

Also not that matters, whatever works, jmo midori = hobby browser. With some tweaking (+noscript) think anything mozilla will run circles around it in all respects and has stuff midori probably ... more like definitley never will. Also at this point, gotsta have ma mozilla based browser. tongue

Out of curiousity ... any chance someone running latest midori or any version of midori could open these 3 links and lemme know the RAM/CPU usage stats they're getting with it ? PM or post ... etc ?

Some common cbiz abbreviations. This will save me time and yet @ same time tell folks what the babble is supposed to mean.

Vll ! = ( Viva la gnu/Linux !)    Vl#!! = ( Viva la #! !)    Last but not least, UD ... OD ! = ( Use Debian ... or die !) tongue

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

CBizgreat!,
to be honest, i am not a big fan of midori either. it was just installed for the purpose of testing WWW access.

regarding RAM/CPU usage of this experiment, i have to repeat myself stating it was running on a VM only,
so any statistics cannot represent the specs on real hardware.
but in a few days i will try this out on an AMD LX800 system with 512 MB RAM.
will report here ASAP ! smile

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

Thanks,

Would be interesting to see. Got the VM thing ... Don't have enough RAM on this old dinosaur to even bother trying to mess with VM stuff. Hmmmm one of these dys, perhaps will stop being lazy and just slap in another RAM chip or summin. Probably not ... tongue

One of the mucho, mas, many great things about gnu/nix. With all this great software around ... I don't have to. wink

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

OK, beat this ! smile
after a netinstall of debian stable (squeeze) i get on an idle JWM desktop the following conky stats:

0...1 % CPU load (remember this is an AMD LX800 !) and 39.9 MiB of RAM use (of total available 512 MB)

cool, eh ? cool

Be careful, after some time you'll get addicted to lower your use of ressources. wink

^ That's truly funny -- using next to nothing in computing power and still getting everything done!  wink

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

Seems a little high, seen another guy using 40 mb of RAM with Openbox on a netinstall. wink

Get Dropbox and an extra 250 mb http://db.tt/wAizqw0

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

^^ lol

must be my special JWM color scheme wink

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

hmm, can't tell you why...but after a reboot, i now have 21.8 MiB of RAM use. no joke ! big_smile

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

^ That sounds more like it ... Congrats though either way.

The almost 40mb one sounded REAL high to me too. This #! install idles @ bootup around 46mbs, and if logout/in = 38mbs. Even the 21.8 guessing you could get more out of. You really don't have much of anything installed afterall jwm n etc. You know you're missing alot of stuff it'd take before most folks would consider it a full OS ... Still kewl share, thanks for posting your findings.

Definitely agree with whoever said trying to minimize sys overhead can be addictive, been there done that. Yet one more reason found and kept using #!. With a tad of fiddling crunchbang is the perfect combo of superlight + plenty of features w/o having to go through all the headache involved in building a gnu/nix OS yourself. Seeing as how am lazy, that greatly appeals to me. wink

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

CBizgreat!,
you are right. one can save a lot of hassle and effort by following the #! way straight ahead.
but in my case, things were a bit different.
i just wanted to make a simple "internet surfboard" wink out of that tiny computer.
and on the other hand, i wanted to learn something about setting up a debian netinstall.
both goals have been reached. mission successful ! big_smile

Re: Debian Squeeze Netinstall

Lol ... don't blame you.

Glad you got it done and shared whatcha discovered with the rest of us. Ya know what they say, no eating bubblegum, unless ya bring enough for the rest of da class. Hmmm, though come to think of it, FORGET THAT ... Who knows how many crunchy bangers there are in the world. That'd be ALOT of bubblegum darn it ! big_smile

Lmao ... nice. lol
