Topic: Hello!

Hi everyone. Just installed my first copy of Crunchbang, or Linux for that matter, today. It has amazed me, after only a few minutes of use, the speed increase over Windows XP on this computer. I have already posted the specs of it here: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … m/page/18/ . Like I said, amazed at the speed increase! Thanks to Crunchbang, and I look forward to conversing with this community and installing Crunchbang on other systems of mine.

hi CR5, welcome to the community!

Re: Hello!

Hey there newcomer!!! Please, sit, make yourself comfortable. ^_^

#! is indeed a great distro, and it's nice to hear that you're enjoying it so much!!

There are many great things about Linux, but some don't often get mentioned. So here goes my own observations!!

Firstly, there's none of this "My computer is faster and thus better than yours!!" here in #!. It seems we're more like artists, who work with what we have to make nice and functional machines, that are a pleasure to use. We don't flex our e-peen's very often. XD

Secondly, we don't generally mind if you stretch your legs a little when it comes to Linux. You said this is your first distro. I wonder what made you choose #! to start with. To be honest, it's not the most user-friendly, if you want to adjust something yourself, generally, you've got to open up a text file somewhere and change a setting or adjust a figure.

My point is, no one will take offense if you want to see what the other distros are like. If you tell us you've run a LiveCD of Knoppix (or whatever), let us know what you think!! We won't be mad if you install a new OS, or you find this to not be your liking, or it takes you a while to get used to it. Really!! It's all good in da hood!! XD

Then there's the support you get. Of course, Linux is free, and thus they don't really offer lots of "technical support" on demand, like if you went to an Apple store and spoke to a sales assistant about your machine. You can't really do that with Linux.

But what we have instead is "community support", awesome forums with awesome people, like the person above here!! We (mostly THEY) help out other people with their issues because they enjoy doing it. They are good people, who like to spread their knowledge and make the world a slightly better place.

Those who do something because they enjoy it are generally going to do better than someone who doesn't want to be there, right?

These guys always try their best to help you out, no matter how "noobish" your question is, or how seemingly obvious to us the answer is. We're friends here, not just bounded by the coincidence of running the same software on our machine, but we've got things in common!! The same people who use #! to design, make it look nice, make it work, find the flaws and patch them up!!

All the mentioned above, and so much more is the essence of Linux!! There's so much to this OS, and even more to the people and the way it's made and all the effort behind it.

When you buy a Mac, you're buying a way of life. It's the same with Linux, but a very different world-view. I'm sure you'll get the gist of it.

Again, welcome to the community, friend. I am goin' to enjoy your being here!!!

Also, sorry for typing loads, it's a problem of mine. tongue

What if I make people laugh about unpleasant things?

Re: Hello!

Thanks everyone!

As for why I chose #!, the background basically was this. A family member of mine, was going to throw away an older laptop she had bought years ago, the Windows XP on it was very slow. I told her I could speed it up for her, and put Linux onto it. Coming into it, I knew I would install Linux, just had no idea which distro. I have followed Linux for a while, just never used it. So last night, I was doing research, as to what distro is best for machines that are older and have lower specs, this one has 256mb of ram, 30GB hdd, Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz processor, ect... I knew something such as Ubuntu would not be an optimal choice with that low specs, therefore I started looking into lighter ones. I was reading on, and came across this one, did research, found it could run on very low spec machines, watches some videos displaying it, and liked it. I then went in and made sure the external wireless network card plugged into the thing would work, and found out that it did, from there, I was convinced. Downloaded and burned the ISO image last night, burned it to a CD, and here I am. smile

Re: Hello!

Brilliant story!!! : D

Most people who come here sign about how it worked "out of the box". It's incredible how many bits of random hardware this OS will work for.

Thanks for answering me so promptly!!

I also bet your relative will be very pleased with the resulting system. ^_^

Re: Hello!

I sure hope she will be pleased! Once again, it is just amazing to me the speed increase, and how easy it was to install, my process in the whole deal was hitting F12 then enter 10 times, then boom it was installed lol

P. S. - My computer is faster than ShadeOfHades', but don't tell him.*

^ My first-gen netbook (single-core hyperthreaded Atom), with Statler, is faster than my roommate's dual-core AMD Athlon desktop running Win7.  I fecking *love* this.

Re: Hello!

^ I wonder if, due to the flooding in Thailand and problems in Japan resulting in supply-chain problems for the big computer companies, people will begin looking into making software and OS' run better than expecting the next generation of CPU, RAM x2, or SSD to make up the difference...
Nah. Who am I kidding? smile
