Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

Very well put, Sector. Whichever side it argued for, that's what I was looking for. smile

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

Thanks for the "Thanks" everyone.  But keep in mind I'm just one man - and a noob at that.  What I said was just my opinion, others may not agree.

Like 'hinto' I have borked my system and in no time flat I get it up and running again, root is small, /home is small and /media/5 is were I keep everything; music, movies, documents, images etc etc.  So I format root and keep the rest.  I also have a folder under /Documents that has text files of things to do after an install, that remind me about things I "need" to do it get my system up and running "the way I like it".

smxi is a different story, it's getting heavy now with updates, but has not let me down.

As to whether this thread can, or should, be marked [Solved] that's not my choice, that's up to Jabroneous who started it. It's his thread.  I simply added my 2¢ worth.

Newb or not, it was eloquently put. Sid is "fun" for me, but you picked up on something that no one else had--do enough people really need to use the bleeding-edge software found in testing and unstable? The answer for me is no, too. roll

Since it was originally meant for discussion (still is, IMO), I'll leave it as-is. It's the most active thread in Feedback & Suggestions, which is great. If anyone else has 2 cents to throw, I don't want to discourage them.

I was kinda hoping to hear that.  If this was a "how do I get w to equal y without passing x?" and you got an answer I would agree; mark it solved.  But the only thing that would 'solve' this is if people stopped discussing the issue.

I'm still looking for a way to make an ISO of what I have right now in / and /home that could be "installed" if need be.  That would really be a great thing to do.

^Virtualization?  How bout a realllllllllllllllllllllllly light host OS and run a virtualization player to play your guest?  That's what I do to run Win7 (client development) and Linux (server development).  My host OS is #! (at the moment).
(But I don't want to hijack the thread)

Well, if you have or need a 'guest' what you are describing works.  But after 3 months of updates into "Testing" is I has an "image" of my system as an ISO that could be installed in the same manner as any text based install process it would save the time smxi would take to get all the updates and maybe break things along the way.

If there was a way to do that - virtually every #! installed on every machine is in affect "a community made #! ISO"  But only good for the machine it came off of.

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

@Sector11

Here is the link that starts with AnInkedSoul's script 'turns the system into a live iso(hybrid) image'

I tested it and it works..

Make sure you have all the things it requires and run it as root.

1) Check out Remastersys. Might be the kind of thing you're looking for. Very useful tool. I've used it many times over the years (for different situations/reasons). You can also modify it to your liking.

2) As someone who is brand new to your #! community (and honestly, I'm not sure which distro I'll ultimately choose for my main desktop system), my opinion is that you should not release an official testing/unstable. Openbox stable fills the niche. I will surely end up with a rolling or semi-rolling distribution of some kind, so *I* would certainly appreciate a sid iso. But I'm not a typical user (a lot of experience over many years with s/w and h/w - though not that much w/ linux). I think it would be wise to help people make the transition if they want to. Naturally. Teach people to fish - don't just feed 'em.

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

First let me say, Welcome to #!.  I hope you enjou your stay.

I've read about that, I'll look at it, thanks.

I'm not going to release anything.  I'm a #! 'user' and have been since v9.04.1 when it was an Ubuntu release.  I prefer stability over bleeding edge any day. And have after a bit of help from a friend taken #! Statler (Debian Squeeze) to #! Wheezy (Debian Testing), via smxi, and it's been running just fine.  ROCK Solid.

I have a #! Sid running on another partition for testing and playing, same friend helped me get it there as well, and it seems OK, but part of me is holding back.  I'm comfortable with testing.

But "if" (and I'm not putting negative waves out into the cosmos here) anything should go wrong, installing #! Statler and then letting smxi do it's thing would bring in thousands of updated and "newly" installed programs.  A lot of room for error. Building an ISO, for personal use, at this point would save all that.

So yea, Remastersys is an option to look at.

Have a cookie, grab a coffee and enjoy the forums.

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

make sure you use this remastersys repo
http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/repository squeeze/

That works "OTB" for me on stable -- I just

sudo remastersys backup

and all is well..so far

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

^ So Remastersys is working again?  That's good news, as it was apparently broken lately -- at least for me it was.  hmm

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

It seems to have run its course already anyway. No worries smile

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

^ One must admit, it was a great journey!

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

I agree! And what's funny is that I've actually gone back to stable... lol

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

^ Ouch... That I could not do..  Sid or nothing for me...

Re: Suggestion: Official CrunchBang testing/unstable?

No worries, it's only temporary. I've got a lot of online classwork saved on my laptop that I can't afford to lose, but as soon as those classes are done (matter of weeks now) I'll be back to the Sid grind.

However, when Wheezy becomes stable, I could see myself sticking with that for a while.
